WASHINGTON, DC: Donald Trump recently joined the call on CNBC's 'Squawk Box', when he dubbed Facebook "an enemy of the people." META, the company that owns Facebook and one of the main drivers of the current market boom, had a roughly 4 per cent decline on Monday, March 11 following the former President's call.

The company's market value went down by about $60 billion since Trump attacked the social media platform on Thursday, March 7 night. Apart from Trump's denunciation, there didn't seem to be any significant factor that caused the Meta selloff.

Gil Luria, an analyst at DA Davidson, told CNN, "It has everything to do with the comments from former President Trump. Facebook has gone through waves of being dragged into the political debate – and it never bodes well for them."

Trump contended that Facebook, with which he has a lengthy history of disputes, would benefit from the ban on TikTok. Trump said, "The thing I don’t like is that without TikTok, you can make Facebook bigger, and I consider Facebook to be an enemy of the people, along with a lot of the media."

Facebook banned Trump for two years following the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. In February 2023, Meta brought back Trump's Instagram and Facebook accounts. Trump added, "I think Facebook has been very dishonest. I think Facebook has been very bad for our country, especially when it comes to elections."

Investors are paying attention to Trump's attacks. Monday's losses for Meta shares were initially estimated to be at 5 per cent, putting them on pace for its worst day since December 2022.

A contentious merger between Trump Media & Technology Group, the firm that owns Truth Social, and a blank-check corporation was just approved by US regulators. Trump would own a sizable and perhaps billion-dollar interest in the recently listed corporation, provided that shareholders accept the deal later this month.
