Shakira says she's 'been through so much pain' after Gerard Pique split
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Shakira made sure the world saw the depth of her heartbreak. The ‘Whenever, Wherever’ singer opened up about one of the toughest moments of her life after her highly publicized breakup with Gerard Pique.
She also shared how she dealt with the pain while supporting her father, who suffered a fall shortly after flying to Barcelona to be by his daughter’s side.
Despite the heartbreak, breakup struggles, and emotional pain she went through, Shakira has released a FIFA track for 2026.
Shakira offers rare insight into her heartbreak after Gerard Pique's split
The Colombian singer is opening up about one of the “darkest” phases of her life after parting ways with Gerard Pique. The ‘Waka Waka’ singer, who shares two children with the former Barcelona footballer, went through a painful breakup in 2022 after 11 years together.
Speaking to The Times in an interview released on Friday, May 22, Shakira reflected on the emotional toll of the split and admitted she experienced the “darkest” moment when “I saw the dissolution of my family.”
"The family that I had dreamt to keep forever," she said as she talked about it with a droopy face.
“I’ve been through so much pain, but it has made me perhaps in an unforeseen way a wiser person—or stronger, at least,” Shakira said. “They say that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, and it is true. It’s amazing to learn that humans have a resilience that we can resort to at any moment in our lives.”
“Sometimes, through hardships and through pain, is how we discover how strong we can be,” she added. “Suffering sometimes makes you a better person, makes you value friends and support."
Shakira chooses gratitude over bitterness after breakup
Even four years after her breakup with Pique, Shakira did not speak negatively about the father of her children. Instead, the singer reflected on the bond they once shared and the role he played in her life.
“I will always have that gratitude in my heart for the father of my kids,” she said, “and (for) turning me into the mother that I am today.” She also opened up about her current love life, admitting that romance is not a priority for her right now.
“No romance for me for now,” she said. “There’s no space or time in my life for that. My plate is quite full.” The singer further reflected on how difficult experiences shaped her perspective on life. “So I thank life for every single moment, the bright ones and the dark ones, the people who have made me suffer because they have become my masters who have taught me lessons, very valuable lessons.”
