NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Susan Sarandon found herself at the end of intense backlash over the weekend over her controversial remarks at a New York City pro-Palestinian protest.

The Oscar-winning actress and activist delivered an impassioned speech in the pouring rain to hundreds gathered in Washington Square Park on Saturday, March 2, for the 'Millions March for Palestine' demonstration, as per the New York Post.

She strongly condemned Israel’s actions towards Palestinians, urging attendees to challenge dominant narratives supporting Israel's retaliation and advocate for Palestinian rights.

Despite heavy rain and wind, supporters turned up in force for the 'Millions March for Palestine' rally. Independent journalist Katie Smith shared a video on social media showing Sarandon, 77, wearing a black raincoat and red scarf as she addressed the enthusiastic crowd.

Other high-profile speakers were also slated to speak at the demonstration, including actress Sara Ramírez and activist Jill Stein. Protesters crowded into the park, chanting slogans and carrying an array of signs and banners decrying Israeli policies towards Palestinians.

Sarandon lamented, "The silence of those who look away when you see crushed children, starving babies, wailing mothers, fathers digging through the rubble to try to find their families... this is unacceptable!"

She went on to say that speaking out against Israel can come at a personal cost, perhaps alluding to being dropped by a Hollywood talent agency in 2023 over controversial remarks she made at a similar protest. However, Sarandon stated that fighting for justice was more important than such consequences.

"Disrupting the narrative of the powerful, fighting for justice, can be lonely work. It can be exhausting. But nothing compared to what is going on in Gaza," acknowledged the 'Stepmom' actress.

As the rain-soaked protest unfolded, attendees chanted, "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free." NYPD officers carrying batons maintained order as the crowd spilled onto the sidewalks around the park.

One said, "Susan Sarandon has no career left, so she has hopped on the pro-Palestinian train for her last 15 minutes of fame," and another claimed, "Well, that is one way for her to become relevant again, I guess."

A person expressed, "What a loser," while someone else remarked, "When Susan Sarandon is speaking at your event, it’s a clear indicator that you are on the wrong side of the issue."

An individual exclaimed, "Such a hateful human being she's become, all in the names of 'humanity' and 'progressive'."

"LOL what a pathetic joke she is," declared another person.
