MIAMI, FLORIDA: A senior aide to former President Donald Trump categorically denied any attempts to approach environmental lawyer Robert F Kennedy Jr. as a potential running mate.

Chris LaCivita, a key adviser to Trump, dismissed reports of reaching out to Kennedy and emphatically ruled out any future consideration for the vice-presidential role.

"This is 100% FAKE NEWS – NO ONE from the Trump Campaign ever approached RFK Jr (or ever will) – one of the most LIBERAL and radical environmentalists in the country. For all the fake news- update your stories," LaCivita posted on X Saturday, January 27.

The clarification from the Trump camp came in response to a report by the New York Post earlier that day, stating that individuals close to Trump had made preliminary overtures to Kennedy, who is currently running as an independent candidate for president.

"Trump operatives expressed an interest in Kennedy early on, but it was all premature," an anonymous source familiar with the matter told the outlet. The overtures reportedly occurred shortly after Kennedy announced his presidential bid as a Democrat in April of the previous year. However, Kennedy switched to an Independent candidate in October.

Despite the denial from the Trump campaign, some figures in the MAGA world, such as Steve Bannon, Trump's former chief White House strategist, have publicly pondered the idea of Trump teaming up with Kennedy. Bannon, however, is not directly associated with the Trump campaign.

Social media reactions

Social media buzzed with reactions after LaCivita's refutation. Some supported the decision, asserting that MAGA is not welcoming potential "backstabbers" in 2025.

"We know this. MAGA is not taking any Democrats or backstabbers to the WH in 2025," one posted on X.

"Wasn’t RFK jr having private meetings with meatball Ron early into the pandemic?" a comment read.

"Jr is a socialist, Trump is a capitalist, to think a blend of the 2 would ever happen is ridiculous," another wrote.

Others insisted that a Trump-Kennedy ticket would be "unstoppable."

"But seriously, a Trump-Kennedy ticket would be absolutely UNSTOPPABLE," one commented.

"Honestly it would be a smart move," another added.

"I find RFK Jr to be a truther & is correct on many issues, most importantly the COVID death shot, currency, he’s anti-war & imo is not corruptible. He's cousin to JFK Jr & shares many stances w him which many MAGA like. I believe a Trump/Kennedy ticket is exactly what we need," someone else offered.

Donald Trump's VP tease and past praise

Trump, the overwhelming favorite for the GOP presidential nod at 77, hinted earlier this month about having someone in mind for his vice president.

While policy disagreements exist, Trump previously praised the 70-year-old Kennedy as a "very smart person." Notably, Kennedy has criticized lawsuits attempting to keep Trump off 2024 ballots under the Constitution's 14th Amendment.

Kennedy, known for his skepticism of certain vaccines, previously garnered attention when Trump considered him for a vaccine safety commission. However, this never materialized.

Despite facing public criticism from his family members who endorsed President Joe Biden, Kennedy has secured notable support in national polls, potentially making him the first independent presidential candidate on the debate stage since 1992.

As of now, Kennedy holds 15.8% support in national polling, trailing behind Biden at 36.2% and Trump at 39%, according to RealClearPolitics. Trump, during successful campaigns in Iowa and New Hampshire, focused on potential running mates from the Republican Party, including Rep Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., and Sen Tim Scott, R-S.C.
