Donald Trump's legal counsel, Ashley Merchant, asked Fani Willis if she had any "proof" that she reimbursed Wade for the vacations she took with him in 2022 and 2023. owing to the payments being made in cash. "The testimony of one witness is enough to prove a fact," Willis replied and asked, "Are you telling me I'm lying?" "I'm asking if you have any proof," the lawyer pressed further. Willis then shot back at Merchant in a heated moment, "The proof is what I just told you."

Merchant asked Willis another question about the relationship, "Has Nathan Wade ever visited you at the place you laid your head?" "When?" Willis responded irritatedly. "Has he ever visited you at the place you lay your head?" the lawyer asked once again. "So let’s be clear because you lied," Willis remarked before picking up various piles of paper. "Right here, you lied right here," the Fulton County District Attorney said, before saying "No, no, no" when the Trump lawyer interjected. "It is a lie," Willis claimed while holding two piles of papers above her head. "It is a lie." At this point in the hearing, Judge McAfee called for a five-minute recess.

Fulton County Superior Judge Scott McAfee had to issue a warning to Willis due to the heated situation. "He never came there, OK. So, if you don't come some place, you can't live there as well," Willis stated, prompting a response from the judge. "I'm gonna have to caution this," McAfee said. "Listen to the questions as asked. If this happens again and again, I'm gonna have no choice but to strike your testimony." Besides, Willis objected to being described as a hostile witness in another instance. "I very much want to be here, so I’m not a hostile witness," Willis explained. "It’s not so much you’re a hostile witness, Ms Willis. It would be an adverse witness," McAfee replied. "Your interests are opposed to Ms Merchant’s." However, Willis argued, "Ms Merchant's interests are contrary to democracy, your Honor, not to mine."

During another moment inside the courtroom, Willis stated, "I had some contact with Mr Wade in 2021, one of the reasons your allegations are so preposterous, or Miss Merchant's." However, before she could elaborate further, Trump's attorney Steve Sadow interrupted her and asked her about the timing of his meeting with Wade for the second time. "I had very limited contact with him because Mr Wade had a form of cancer that makes your allegation somewhat ridiculous," Willis responded with fury. "I do appreciate the characterization," Sadow remarked. "I’m not going to emasculate a black man," Willis declared. "Did you understand that? I don’t think we should discuss further."

"You're confused," Willis remarked at another point in the hearing. "You think I'm on trial? These people are on trial for trying to steal an election in 2020. I'm not on trial no matter how hard you try to put me on trial," she said. In 2021, Willis hired Nathan Wade to assist in prosecuting her extensive racketeering case against Trump. However, Trump's co-defendant, Michael Roman, argued in court documents submitted last month that Willis should be disqualified from the case, alleging she had a financial interest in hiring Wade due to their prior romantic relationship. The court adjourned at around 5 pm on Thursday and Willis is expected to continue her testimony on Friday, February 16.
