6-year-old Oregon boy fatally mauled by Great Dane-Mastiff mixes in horrifying Portland dog attack
PORTLAND, OREGON: Two Great Dane-Mastiff mixes fatally mauled a 6-year-old boy on the morning of December 5. The incident took place at the home of a family friend of the child, reported the New York Post.
According to a statement from the Portland Police Bureau, authorities responded to the scene around 7:40 am. A woman covered in blood, identified as a friend of the boy's grandmother, greeted them at the door. The woman's name remains undisclosed.
The woman informed the officers who arrived that her large dogs had jumped on the child after he followed her into the garage of her home. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The family friend, who suffered minor injuries on her hand, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Portland Police Bureau issues statement in the aftermath of horrifying dog attack
PPB Public Information Officer Mike Benner told Fox12, "We understand that the homeowner/dog owner did everything in her power to stop this attack, at some point even grabbing a gun - it never got that far. She did everything she could to save this boy’s life.”
“I speak for everyone at the bureau when I say that our hearts break for this little boy, for his family, for his friends. I mean, anytime something like this happens it’s a shock to the conscience but to have this happen just weeks before Christmas is unimaginable,” he added.
The investigation into the boy's death will be led by the PPB Child Abuse Team, assisted by the Homicide Division.
It is too early to state whether the owner of the dogs will face charges for the attack, mentioned Brenner.
The child was supposed to head to school
Officials stated that the boy was dropped off at the dog owner’s home to be taken to school. This was an everyday arrangement between the two families.
The dogs were confined in the garage, and the boy had been cautioned to avoid that area due to the potential danger posed by the animals.
However, the authorities stated that the dogs had never been reported as a problem before. They have since been taken into the custody of Multnomah County Animal Services.
One of the dogs has been labeled as the "primary aggressor" even though both were involved in the attack.
