WASHINGTON, DC: Rep Elise Stefanik is advising her peers to broach the topic of abortion without hesitation. The Republican congresswoman from upstate New York and head of the House GOP conference advised colleagues facing challenging elections to focus on the intensely polarizing topic, as per the New York Post.

During a retreat in West Virginia, Stefanik said, "We believe it’s important for our members to engage on this issue and not stick their heads in the sand, which I think some potential candidates had done in the past."

Elise Stefanik urges Republicans to keep pushing abortion issue

She highlighted two contentious issues with voters: the Democrats' backing of late-term abortion and the repeal of laws prohibiting government funding for the procedure, according to USA Today.

Stefanik told the New York Post, "Democrats are significantly disconnected from the views of the American people regarding abortion. While their party platform once advocated for abortions to be 'safe, legal, and rare,' it now unequivocally backs taxpayer-funded late-term abortions up until birth."

She added, "I am pro-life with the exceptions of rape, incest, and life of the mother. This is a position supported by a majority of Americans. As Republicans, we must speak loudly and clearly in support of families, women, and children on this moral issue and not allow Democrats and their stenographers in the mainstream media to lie about our positions."

In 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, thereby eliminating the federal right to abortion and returning control of the matter to the states. This year's presidential election will be the first since this significant development.

However, abortion has become a political tool for many Democrats, given that surveys indicate over 60% of people oppose the abortion restrictions that certain states in the US have sought to enact.

In 2023, voters in deeply conservative Ohio approved a bill that enshrined the right to an abortion in the state constitution.

A year earlier, in Kansas, a traditionally Republican stronghold, voters decisively rejected a referendum initiative that aimed to incorporate abortion restrictions into the state constitution.

Additionally, Montana voters defeated a law that would have required healthcare providers to care for infants "born alive" in cases of mishandled abortions.
