Ah'Laynah Ross death: Teen charged as 6-year-old is tragically killed by unsecured gun while mom was away
DALLAS, TEXAS: When the mother of the 6-year-old Dallas girl was at a mortuary arranging funeral arrangements for her 14-year-old so , who had been shot on December 29, the girl was shot dead in absence of her mother at her family's house on Wednesday afternoon by a teen using an unsecured gun.
The girl, whose family had named her Ah'Laynah Modica-Ross, was taken to the hospital just before 3 pm on Wednesday in critical condition, according to the Dallas Police Department.
How was Ah'Laynah Modica-Ross shot?
Ah’Laynah subsequently passed away from her wounds. She was home with two adults and two other children at the time of her shooting, according to the authorities, who have not yet disclosed how she was shot.
Damariya Sowels, a 19-year-old, was taken into custody for unrelated warrants and suspected of tampering with tangible evidence. He admitted to investigators that he had brought two guns into the house and had left one, a MAC-10, on top of a PlayStation game console in a third-floor bedroom.
As per the police information found in an arrest affidavit that HuffPost was able to obtain, Sowels claimed that he went upstairs following the shooting and took the MAC-10 before the investigators showed up.
He allegedly put it in a backpack along with the other gun, a Glock 40, and hid it in the garage, where crime scene investigators later found it, the affidavit says.
Ah-bralen Rider was shot dead on December 29
Authorities said that Ah-bralen "Bra" Rider, the elder brother of Ah'Laynah, was shot on December 29 at a friend's apartment and passed away on New Year's Eve.
He was with another 14-year-old who had also been shot, but she was expected to live. Due to his age, the identity of the 16-year-old boy who was arrested in connection with the shootings has not been made public.
The mother of the children, Brittney Ross, discussed her son's passing last week in a television interview with Dallas station KTVT-TV, with Ah'Laynah by her side. She expressed her "overwhelming" grief over the deaths of her two children on Tuesday.
She also announced that the funeral for Ah-bralen, which was scheduled for this Saturday, would be rescheduled to allow the two to be buried together.
Ah'Laynah Modica-Ross' family 'living in a nightmare'
Relatives claimed that Ross has four surviving children in a GoFundMe page to help with burial costs.
Michael Key, the siblings' grandfather, said to reporters on Thursday that the family was currently "living in a nightmare."
On December 27, Ah'Laynah turned six, but she still hadn't opened all of her gifts. Key remarked, "It's hard right now, dealing with the loss of two grandbabies back-to-back, especially this little one.”
Ah'Laynah was described as "very sweet, very smart — highly intelligent." “This was my heart,” he said.
