A man recently took to Reddit to reveal why he decided to break up with his girlfriend after she asked for a new car.

Taking to Reddit’s subsection, “Am I the A**hole” (AITA), the Reddit user, under the username Fancy-Persimmon67, began, “So here’s the deal. I recently came into some money—nothing life-changing, but enough to do something nice.”

He continued, “I thought it would be amazing to take my girlfriend on a dream vacation, something we’ve both talked about for years but could never afford. I figured it would be a special experience for us as a couple.”

Man’s girlfriend called vacation a ‘selfish’ choice

However, when the original poster (OP) revealed his plan to his girlfriend, she was not thrilled at all, instead, she got angry.

“She said, ‘Why would we waste that money on a vacation when I could use a new car instead?’” the Redditor shared in his post.

He also mentioned that his girlfriend’s car is in perfect condition and it does not need to be replaced now.

“I tried explaining that the trip wasn’t just about spending money—it was about creating memories, taking a break from the grind, and enjoying life together. She doubled down, calling the vacation a ‘selfish’ choice and insisting that buying her a car would be ‘better for both of us in the long run,’” he wrote.

OP realized he and his girlfriend are not on the same page

The OP noted that his girlfriend did not understand his point and even accused him of not wanting to “invest in our future.” She also claimed that he was not “serious about the relationship.”

“That hit me hard. I realized we have very different ideas about what ‘our future’ means. After thinking it over, I told her I couldn’t keep going if we couldn’t even agree on something like this,” the OP further explained.

The man disclosed that his girlfriend called him “selfish and materialistic” and also blamed him for choosing “‘fun’ over her.”

“AITA for ending it? I feel bad, but also like her reaction said a lot about our compatibility,” he added.

Redditors back OP and say he is not ‘materialistic’

People on Reddit supported the OP's decision to break up with his girlfriend over the issue and said that he was not wrong in taking the step.

One individual supported that man, saying, “NTA, tell everyone your side and leave it at that. You dodged a bullet with her showing herself. Also comical she said you’re materialistic when she’s demanding a NEW CAR.”

“NTA. A down payment on a house is ‘investing for the future.’ A new car is not,” another Redditor wrote.

One person commented, “Absolutely not 😭😭 that is YOUR money and you are the sole person who decides how its spent. On top of that, her priorities are clearly out of whack, and since you visibly have your priorities in check, it's most likely for the better. For the time being, spend some of that money on yourself. You deserve it, do something nice for you.”

Another stated, “NTA. YOU’RE materialistic because you want to spend money on a vacation that benefits you both, but she wants you to spend the money on a car for just her even though her existing vehicle runs just fine? Um OK. This is a textbook example of dodging a bullet.”

“NTA. Vacations can be cars for the soul, and it sounds like yours needs a ride more than her Honda does. You offered a memory, she countered with an invoice. You’re both on different highways; better to know now than later!” one netizen wrote.

Another added, “NTA. You wanted to make memories, she wanted material things. Sounds like you two are on different pages in the book of life. A vacation can be a lifetime memory, but a car? That's just temporary luxury. You did what felt right for you!”
