'AITA for calling out my overweight housemates for binging on my lunch out of boredom?'
Sharing a house and staying with people who are not family is a different experience on its own. At times, people tend to make the best of friends with their roommates, whereas sometimes, it turns out to be a nightmare of an experience.
Recently, a person on Reddit's popular "Am I the A*****e" forum shared an incident where the user wrote that they called out people they are sharing a house with because they ate too much out of boredom.
Reddit user calls out housemates for eating too much out of boredom
The person wrote on the AITA forum that five people share a big house. The person mentioned that they are all acquaintances but not close friends and they have an open fridge policy for groceries where they all get groceries.
The person wrote on the forum, "I'm totally fine with this for the most part until recently when stuff I got for my lunches (I pack my lunches for work, nobody else does) has been disappearing at an insane rate. Like I got a pound of ham, turkey, and provolone and a loaf of bread and it was gone in 3 days."
The user added that when they brought this up with their housemates and they said that they all had an understanding of this. The Reddit user said that they do and it is totally fine with anyone eating the stuff the person buys for sustenance.
The person added that the issue they have is that people aren't eating it for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and the food is being consumed quickly because others smoke weed and just stand there and graze. They come down late at night and eat out of boredom.
The user continued, "The 4 of them are rather overweight and drawing this distinction hurt their feelings, with them saying who am I to say what food is "necessary" to eat, and what is gorging. And I said I'm not deciding what is necessary but come on, you KNOW eating a third of a lb of turkey out of the bag at 11 pm after having 3 full meals during the day is not sustenance helping you get through the day and stay fueled."
The person concluded the post with, "I still buy ingredients and snacks and make dinner often because I love cooking for people, but I also bought a mini fridge and keep the stuff I use to make my lunches in my room now. Am I an a**hole for bringing it up? Should I have just got the mini fridge and gone about it quietly?"
Internet has mixed reaction to Reddit user's post
People on the internet had mixed reactions after a Reddit user called out his housemates because they ate too much out of boredom.
A user replied on the post, "The food "system" you have in place is a recipe for disaster. Appetites vary, as do schedules, tastes and budgets. It would drive me up the wall if i was trying to plan my meals but got home to find my ingredients sacrificed to the munchies. Opt out of shared groceries."
Another mentioned, "YTA for making it about their weight. The real issue is the absolute insanity of your household's grocery policy. If you are having a problem with it, which is 100% valid of you, say you want out of the agreement and to purchase and eat your own private groceries. Don't bring anyone's body into it."
One person added, "NTA. It sounds like you tried to address the situation with some sensitivity considering the open fridge policy. It’s totally reasonable to expect that food meant for your lunches lasts more than a couple of days!"
Another wrote, "NTA. Weed makes you hungry. You need to stop the sharing."
One individual remarked, "YTA. If you have an open fridge system but there are certain items that you need to not be eaten by others, then you need to be proactive about that, either by buying a minifridge or demarcating a part of the fridge for yourself."
