A man finds himself torn after informing his wife he will stop paying for her mother’s medical expenses. The 30-year-old made this decision after uncovering several troubling events involving his in-laws.

While his wife initially accepted his choice to stop financially supporting her family, she then urged him to reconsider, stressing that halting her mother's medical payments would severely impact her health.

Man details why he wants to stop paying for mother-in-law's medication

A Redditor recently posed a question asking if he was wrong for stopping the payment of his mother-in-law's medication. The 30-year-old man, who has been married to his 34-year-old wife, explained that he had been covering the costs of his mother-in-law’s medication for five years. However, he decided to stop after discovering several troubling incidents involving his wife’s family.

The man shared that the first issue arose when he learned about his wife’s past. At 18, she was forced by her mother to marry an older man for money to pay off loans. He added, "I never thought of my wife as a gold digger since she worked for herself and never depended on the guy's money. Even after he died, my wife decided to not get a single cent and let his children have 100% of the guys money and properties. My in laws just pushed her so they can get their loans paid."

In another troubling discovery, the man recounted how his sister-in-law borrowed a "significant amount of money" from them to fix her roof, yet failed to repay it on time despite agreeing to a one-year repayment plan. He shared, "They have money to spend on their vices: alcohol, gambling, etc. but they can't pay us. After this incident, we decided to stop lending her money. She then told everyone we're selfish and arrogant."

He then detailed, "We bought a house and needed some help with renovation and moving in. My in laws helped out but are always expecting money in return. It got to the point that my Father In Law would complain that he's not getting enough from us and decided to just stop helping us move in. After this happened, they started to bad mouth as to the rest of my wife's family. Telling them we're ungrateful."

Further, the man explained that his wife’s siblings kept asking for money for non-emergencies. He had set aside money from selling his house for emergencies, but felt uncomfortable when he realized that he was giving it to his wife’s family while not having an emergency fund for his own parents.

Another revelation came when he found out that his in-laws planned to leave his wife out of their inheritance and give everything to his sister-in-law. He shared, "It's not super big, we don't even need it. I feel bad because after all the things that my wife did for them, she's not even part of their plans."

With all of this in mind, the man said that his wife had started to block her family's financial requests, and she had been transparent with him about every penny spent.

He concluded, "Lastnight, I've told my wife I no longer want to help them in any way including her mother's medication maintenance and she got hurt. She told me she understands if I dont want to help her family financially but I should atleast be willing to help her mother's medication since this would greatly affect her health. AITA for telling her this?"
