Having a roommate who is also a good friend is nothing short of a blessing in this generation. However, things can be quite difficult if you don't have a cooperative roommate, especially if the roommate intrudes into your privacy.

Recently, a woman on Reddit's popular "Am I the A**hole" forum shared that she kicked her roommate out for placing a hidden camera in their apartment and secretly recording her.

Woman finds hidden cameras in her apartment

The 26-year-old woman wrote in the AITA forum that she lived in a two-bedroom apartment with her roommate, Sarah (26). They had been friends for years and decided to move in together to save money. The woman said for the most part, living with Sarah had been a good experience, until recently.

She wrote, "A few weeks ago, I started noticing weird things, like my stuff being moved around when I wasn’t home. I asked Sarah about it, and she brushed it off, saying maybe I was imagining it or forgetting where I’d put things."

The OP said one night when she was up late, she noticed a blinking light coming from one of her bookshelves. To her utter shock, she found a small hidden camera tucked between some books.

"I freaked out and confronted Sarah. She admitted she’d put cameras in the common areas and my room because she felt “unsafe” and wanted to “monitor the apartment"," the woman wrote.

The OP said Sarah claimed it wasn’t a big deal because she wasn’t watching the footage unless something happened, but the woman felt completely violated.

She wrote, "I told her it was an invasion of my privacy, and she didn’t have the right to record me without my consent."

Further in the post, she mentioned that Sarah tried to argue that since they shared the apartment, she had the right to know what was happening in it.

The woman said, "I disagreed, especially since the camera was hidden in my personal space. After a heated argument, I told her she had to move out by the end of the month."

She concluded the post, "She’s now telling mutual friends I'm overreacting and that she was just trying to 'feel safe'. Some of them are saying I should have handled it differently or given her a chance to stay. But to me, this was a deal-breaker."

Internet sides with OP after she throws out roommate over hidden cameras

Several Reddit users sided with the woman after she kicked her roommate out for placing hidden cameras in their apartment and secretly recording her.

A user commented on the post, "NTA. Recording someone without their consent is a massive violation of trust and privacy, especially in their personal space."

A user also added, "You’re definitely not overreacting. What she did was a huge violation of trust and privacy. It’s your home too, and you have every right to feel safe there."

A person mentioned, "NTA, secretly recording someone in their private space is a massive violation. If she felt unsafe there are a hundred better ways to address it than turning your home into her personal surveillance project. You handled it better than most would because honestly that’s an instant eviction move."
