‘AITA for refusing to give my co-worker free rides after he didn’t lend me $1 at vending machine?’

A Reddit user took to the 'Am I The A*****e' (AITA) forum to seek advice from other Redditors after he refused to give free rides to his co-worker because he declined to give him a dollar at the vending machine.

The Original Poster, under the username BeginningJoke3830, began, “I usually give my co-worker a ride on the way back from work, usually driving 5 miles out of my way per day to drop him off at his place because he doesn’t have a car.”

The user revealed that he had been doing that for about two years now and never asked for anything in return. The co-worker too never offered anything.

Man reveals how co-worker offended him

However, things changed when the man wanted a small favor from his co-worker but the latter, without giving a second thought, blatantly refused him.

The man explained, “Yesterday, I was at the vending machine and wanted a soda. I was short of a dollar and had left my wallet in my car. I would usually go get my wallet, but it takes forever to wait for the elevators at my workplace, so I asked if he could spot me a dollar for the soda.”

“He straight up refused and said, ‘Just use your own money, man. I don’t really give money to friends or co-workers, sorry,’” the Redditor revealed.

His response left the man stunned, who claimed to have spent more than $1,500 in gas “over the past two years for this guy, and he can’t even spot me a dollar just this once?”

Concluding his post, the man wrote, “I got pretty upset by that, and once it hit 5, I told him I’m not giving him free rides anymore. He seemed upset and said I was petty. AITA?"

Internet calls out man’s 'petty' co-worker

The Reddit community quickly rushed to support the man and slam his co-worker.

One user wrote, “NTAH, You asked him for a small favour and he refused and shamed you. You have no obligation to keep offering him a ride. Though, you should know that this will drastically deteriorate your relationship and they will make a big deal of it.”

Another user commented, “NTA, your coworker absolutely took your generosity for granted. You've gone 5 miles out of your way every day for two years without ever asking for anything in return and the one time you needed a tiny favor, he flat-out refused? That’s not just inconsiderate, it's entitled. He’s only calling you petty because now he’s the one inconvenienced. You don’t owe him anything and you’re well within your rights to stop doing favors for someone who wouldn’t lift a finger for you.”

“If I had a spare dollar on me and a complete stranger asked me for it I’d give it to them, wtf is wrong with him. I wouldn’t call it petty, I’d call it just desserts. NTA,” the third one said.

A person wrote, “NTA. It was petty of him not to loan you a dollar, is he the only one who gets to be petty? Don't walk a mile for someone who wouldn't take a step on your behalf.”

Another posted, “NTA. Spotting you a dollar when you've been giving them free rides for two years should be a no brainer. I would have cut off the rides too. Guy clearly isn't grateful to you. Sucks to be him.”

“Ahahahahahaha. That is the best! Wow. He is the biggest AH on Reddit. Just screwed himself out of a ride too. Good for you for making that decision and stick with it. He would never get in my car again,” a comment read.
