A heated family argument broke out during a birthday meal when a woman's mother-in-law (MIL) tried to remove her infant from her arms without talking to her.

The Original Poster (OP), who goes by the username One-Pineapple6919, explained on Reddit's popular 'Am I the A**hole' (AITA) forum how she and her husband's family of seven have been at odds ever since they ceased financially supporting his mother.

Woman details mother-in-law's behavior as she tries 'to take my baby out my arms'

Explaining the ongoing situation in a post titled, 'AITA for not letting my MIL take my son out of my arms', the OP shared that she and her husband, who had a child within a year-and-a-half of their relationship, had been helping her mother-in-law get off the ground by paying her bills.

The OP wrote: "My husband is the only boy in his family of 7 and he was always really the “man of the house." When we got together, we moved very fast."

"We moved in together, got married, and pregnant with our baby within the first year and a half of our relationship so I never really got close to his family but we got along well...," she added.

However, after the birth of their child, they determined that their finances ought to be directed toward their child's future.

The OP continued: "We were paying them so she could get on her feet but with the baby coming we just thought it wasn’t very smart of us to continuing using a good portion of our money/savings on his moms rent/bills, we could be putting that towards our baby and his future."

The husband's family did not approve of the decision. "This upset the whole house and everybody started to tell us how they really felt, well not even us, just me!" the OP shared.

According to her, her in-laws accused her of "corrupting" her husband and removing him from their lives, calling him their "leader and support".

"They think i’m corrupting his head, making him distant himself from them, I “took their leader and support” and I’m just like what the actual f," the woman said.

The OP added, "This man and I have a family, I’m not taking anything away from them, but we’re his family now too. His mom talks about my baby and me on facebook constantly and I say nothing to this lady! Literally."

She claimed that her husband's relatives largely neglected her at his birthday dinner, which was the tipping point in the situation.

"My husband had a birthday dinner Sunday and it was very awkward and just not friendly. All of them basically ignored my presence (except for 2 sisters) and were being shady the whole dinner but I never said a thing," she said.

Her mother-in-law tried to remove her infant from her arms toward the end of the night without mentioning a word to her.

The OP explained: "Towards the end of the dinner his mom comes and tries to take my son out my arms without even saying a word to me, I'm like wtf."

"You don’t even say a word to me but can come and try to take my baby out my arms??? After you’ve been constantly talking about my son and I on facebook as a 50-60 year old woman?? REALLY??!" the woman fumed.

She noted, "I just pushed her hands away and starts yelling and “I can’t take my grandbaby” in the middle of the restaurant like..."

The husband's family accused the OP of ruining his birthday party.

Being "confused", the OP concluded the post saying, "It’s Wednesday and their still blowing my husbands phone up about this."

Redditors outraged over OP's mother-in-law's behavior at restaurant

In over 300 comments, Reddit users shared their thoughts on the mother-in-law's actions and noted that the husband "needs to stand up for better", declaring the OP "NTA".

One user commented, "NTA - but I think you might be misplacing your frustration. It seems like your husband has a huge part to play in this as it is his family. Why isn't he resolving the issue with is wacky family? He should be talking to them about they they are treating you."

A second Redditor added, "And what has your husband said? He's been the defacto husband and daddy to everyone and now that the money train is stopping they are mad. This is really an issue he needs to solve. He cannot stand by and let his family harass you and him because he's prioritizing his wife and child. Perhaps they need a little time-out (low/no contact) until they can behave or it becomes permanent. I would not let them hold my happiness hostage because they are mad. NTA."

"You are kinder than I. I would’ve bitten that crazy lady’s hands if she tried to forcibly take my child from me. NTA, but your husband needs to stand up for you better. He should be shutting this DOWN," remarked a third user.

Another added, "NTA. Your husband needs to grow a spine immediately and tell off his family. He's got a child to support and that child takes priority, which includes the mother of the child. He's got what, six sisters? And they can't figure out how to handle mommy together? Bulls**t."

"NTA, if you arent good enough to talk to then why would she have the right to hold your baby. respect goes both ways," a user added.
