A healthy relationship between two partners is built when their parents support them through every phase of life and give them sufficient freedom and space. However, at times, parents of either the boy or the girl start behaving in a weird manner which ultimately ruins a lot of things.

Recently, a man on Reddit's popular 'Am I the A*****e' forum shared that he is thinking of breaking up with his girlfriend after her parents followed him abroad to keep an eye on him.

Girlfriend's parents show up unannounced at boyfriend's home country

The 28-year-old man wrote in the AITA forum titled, 'My girlfriend's parents surprised me with a visit overseas. I'm considering breaking up with her', that he and his 33-year-old girlfriend have been together for a few years and have discussed getting married.

However, ever since he met her parents last year, their behavior (specifically her mother's) has made it difficult for him to see a future anymore.

The man wrote on the AITA forum, "Her mom mistrusts me and it’s all based on superficial impressions and assumptions about who she thinks I am. I have tried to show her parents patience and I’ve been extremely respectful, giving them opportunities to get to know me and overcome their prejudices."

The man then wrote that everything came to a head when he went to visit his home country. He mentioned that he had a place there and had gone to attend his friend's marriage.

He added, "Her parents showed up unannounced and requested a ride from the airport. I immediately called my girlfriend despite the time difference because I was in shock. She claims she had no idea about their plans."

He mentioned that the girlfriend's parents claimed it was all impromptu/cheap flight/last minute etc. which he did not believe.

"Anyway I picked them up and they’re currently staying with me in my apartment. They’ve got no itinerary but want me to arrange for them to see x y z and of course, they need me as translator. Everything is too foreign to them, they’re lost without me. They refuse to go anywhere without me as an escort," he wrote.

The man added that his girlfriend was apologetic, but he just didn't see her supporting him in dealing with her parents, especially her mother, who was quite an instigator.

He added that his girlfriend didn't support him in setting boundaries, and as her partner, he was pushed into a "hard-place type of situation".

He concluded the post, "I can’t tell if I’m being cold and uninviting, or if these people are crazy and my girlfriend is so afraid of them she didn’t even warn me about something like this. I feel like I can handle anything if she’s on my side… but it doesn’t feel like she is. Maybe I can’t be with someone like that.."

Internet thinks OP 'deserves way better'

Several Redditors sided with the OP who was thinking of breaking up with his girlfriend because of her parents' weird behavior toward him.

A user commented on the post, "NTA. And don’t be surprised if your girlfriend not only knew about their plan, but actively participated in it. You think it’s bad now, imagine what it will be like once you’re married to her AND her mom."

Another person wrote, "NTA. Neither your girlfriend or her parents respect you. I would even think that your girlfriend knew about this and didn’t tell you. You deserve way better."

A person stated, "NTA. Surprise visits like this are a huge red flag in the boundary department. It’s like her parents think it’s a reality TV show where they can just pop in anytime. Your GF needs to step up and be your teammate, or else it’s just gonna keep being you vs. her parents."

A user also mentioned, "NTA. What a weird situation. Sorry you have to deal with it. It's beyond rude of them to expect this as you probably have your own plans."

"NTA. Should just leave them at airport, no pickup, no housing, just tell them you broke up," said one user.
