NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Left-leaning Democratic socialist Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is facing backlash after declining to debate her lesser-known Democratic opponent, Marty Dolan, just weeks before the June 25 primary, the latter revealed on Tuesday, May 21.

Ocasio-Cortez, anticipated to secure a fourth term in office, is set to face off against Marty Dolan, a retired Wall Street banker who remains an underdog in the race.

Marty Dolan seeks debate with AOC

Dolan had formally requested a debate with AOC following her appearance on CBS's 'Late Night Show' with Steven Colbert, seeking an opportunity to challenge her platform and policies.

However, Dolan expressed frustration at Ocasio-Cortez's lack of response, labeling her as 'AWOL'. “She thinks she’s above the democratic process,” Dolan claimed. “AOC is AWOL, which is no surprise.” “She’s ducking. She’s a chicken,” reported New York Post.

AOC had no primary challenger in 2022

Notably, Ocasio-Cortez engaged in a heated debate with her then-primary opponent, Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, in a televised showdown on BronxNet ahead of the 2020 primary. However, she did not face a Democratic primary opponent in 2022.

The 14th Congressional District, encompassing parts of The Bronx and Queens, will be the stage for this electoral showdown. Ocasio-Cortez boasts a campaign treasury of $6 million, while Dolan finds himself financially strained after personally funding his campaign.

Marty Dolan highlights contrasting views on immigration and Green New Deal

Dolan argues that voters deserve to hear a debate contrasting his moderate views with Ocasio-Cortez's perceived "radical" agenda. He opposes Ocasio-Cortez's support for New York's sanctuary policy, advocating for a crackdown on illegal immigration instead. “We should freeze illegal immigration,” said Dolan.

Dolan also critiques Ocasio-Cortez's Green New Deal, warning of potential increases in electricity costs for constituents. “She’s chasing two rabbits — national fame and trying to serve her district. You can’t do both,” added Dolan.

Netizens react to AOC's refusal to debate opponent Marty Dolan

A user tweeted, "She’d get schooled and doesn’t want the embarrassment." Another chimed in, "No, he just isn't worth her time. #NoScrubs." A third said, "AOC may win in her district of 770,000 but she is a big asset to Republicans nationally."

"I wonder who started the trend?" mockingly questioned a user. "Coward. @AOC," read a tweet. "Voters will probably prove her right," remarked a user. "Why get exposed?" questioned another.
