HILO, HAWAII: A woman experiencing homelessness in Hawaii reportedly delivered her baby on a sidewalk and is accused of subsequently moving her newborn daughter by pulling her along the street using the umbilical cord, as per the New York Post.
Initially, doctors were uncertain about the newborn's chances of survival. Paramedics discovered the baby last week, and although she was found to be breathing, she remained silent and appeared lifeless.
Who is Ashley Aileen Maile Lum?
The mother of the newborn baby girl has been identified as 41-year-old Ashley Aileen Maile Lum, a homeless woman.
Lum was arrested and subsequently released on bail while further investigation is underway. The Hawaii Police Department responded to the distressing incident in Hilo at approximately 5:15 pm on Tuesday, January 16.
Captain Rio Amon-Wilkins, representing the police department, informed Island News that, ''The initial call came in that she was actually walking on the side walk and dragging the baby."
"Fire Department personnel showed up with an ambulance initially, but the female was still connected to the baby by the umbilical cord."
Wilkins said, "So, they cut the umbilical cord and took the baby into the ambulance to provide medical attention and then transported the baby to the hospital."
''Thankfully, the baby was not really injured in this incident, which was initially reported. She is in good condition by what we have been told by the doctors," Wilkins added.
