WASHINGTON, DC: The Atlantic writer Mark Leibovich has penned a scathing op-ed, labeling President Joe Biden a “weak” candidate for the 2024 election and arguing that he is “too old to run” for office.

Leibovich’s piece, published on Friday, draws a stark comparison between Biden and the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, with a headline suggesting that “no matter the obstacles that Donald Trump creates for himself, Joe Biden’s candidacy remains an existentially risky, perhaps disastrous, proposition.”

Despite Trump's legal troubles, Biden seen as 'weak' 2024 candidate

In his critique, Leibovich contends that despite Trump’s numerous criminal indictments and his recent conviction in a Manhattan courtroom on 34 counts of falsifying business records, Biden remains a “comprehensively weak incumbent” ahead of the November election.

“At 81, he is much too old to run for president. Durable supermajorities of voters still do not want any part of Biden at this age,” Leibovich penned. “His bullheaded insistence on doing something no one has ever done (Ronald Reagan, then the oldest president in American history, was 77 when he retired), along with the unwillingness or inability of Democrats to stop him, remains an existentially risky, potentially disastrous, proposition.”

Leibovich emphasizes the high stakes of the upcoming election, stating, “If Biden loses in November, that’s all anyone will remember him for.” He cites data indicating that Biden has been either tied or trailing the presumptive Republican nominee for the past few months, highlighting Biden’s apparent inability “to reverse his deficits in the most contested states.”

Polls show Trump leading Biden

According to Real Clear Politics, Trump holds a small but steady lead over Biden nationally and also leads in nearly every major swing state. Despite the margin being slim, RCP polling averages indicate that Trump has consistently maintained this lead over Biden for the past year.

The Atlantic staff writer highlighted an NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll from last month, showing Trump with a two-point lead that expands to four points when third-party candidates are included.

“In its ongoing effort to console nervous Democrats, Bidenworld keeps trotting out its usual barrage of ‘Don’t worry,’ ‘Voters haven’t really tuned in yet,’ and ‘There’s still plenty of time left.’ It is now June,” Leibovich stated.

“Is this reassurance or wishful thinking? Does Biden’s team have any coherent message about what he hopes to accomplish in a second term, apart from thwarting Trump and staying alive?”

Leibovich criticized Biden by comparing him to the late Justice Ginsburg, whose legacy, he argued was “stained by her unwillingness to retire while Barack Obama was still president.”

Ginsburg’s death at 87 in the final months of Trump’s presidency allowed him to appoint her successor, Amy Coney Barrett. Leibovich argued that “Biden’s conduct is far worse than Ginsburg’s, in fact, given the awesome power of the presidency and the havoc Trump could unleash with it this time.”

Netizens react to growing concerns over Biden's re-election bid

A user tweeted, "Biden “continues to submit that the main rationale for his presidency is as a high-stakes game of keep-away. There’s no question he’s better than the alternative, but that doesn’t mean it’s enough,” he concluded."

A second user, "Exactly. However, I don't want him cuz he's ruined our country & he's a liar amoung other factors."

"It’s becoming obvious that Biden will never run in 2024 because he is not in the bounds of possibility, he is Physically and Mentally inferior, a degenerate and Corrupt. He will be lucky not to be Jailed! “Fit to Govern Fit to be Jail," a third said. "Agree," simply wrote a user.
