Boris Johnson claims Biden refused to board naval ship due to 'too many steps' during 2021 UK visit
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: In his upcoming autobiography, former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson claims that President Joe Biden declined to tour the British Navy's new flagship aircraft carrier because of the number of steps involved and seemed to take "a bit of shine" to Johnson's wife during his 2021 visit.
The President and Johnson met before the G7 summit in Cornwall, where, as noted in Johnson's new book 'Unleashed', the British government had "proudly stationed" its massive warship, the HMS Prince of Wales, valued at $4.3 billion.
Boris Johnson raises concerns about Joe Biden's fitness during 2021 UK visit
According to an excerpt from the book, Boris Johnson and his aides had speculated before Joe Biden's first presidential trip abroad whether the then 78-year-old US leader was "really as elderly-seeming as his detractors sometimes claimed," as reported by The Telegraph.
“His staff told us that he would not in fact be boarding our vast aircraft carrier — which we had proudly stationed in the bay — because it had so many steps; and we wondered what that meant about his physical fitness,” Johnson said.
However, Biden appeared lively enough to share jokes with Johnson's new wife, 33-year-old Carrie, to whom he seemed to have taken "a bit of a shine," as noted by the former prime minister.
While attending the summit with his wife Jill, Biden remarked that both he and Johnson had "married above ourselves" and jokingly suggested that he and Carrie might sneak away for a solitary walk.
“‘Why don’t you and I head down to the beach … and leave this guy here?’” he joked to Carrie, as “Jill Biden rolled her eyes,” Johnson recalled in his memoir.
Joe Biden's G7 trip was marred by awkward gaffe
During Joe Biden's 2021 G7 trip, a notable incident occurred during a roundtable discussion when he mistakenly corrected Boris Johnson for not introducing "the President of South Africa," despite Johnson having already done so by name.
The President withdrew from the reelection campaign and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris due to concerns about his mental and physical fitness following a challenging debate with former President Donald Trump in June.
Johnson's autobiography is scheduled to be released on October 10.
