Queens shooting leaves teen, 16, fighting for life hours after 11-year-old boy is shot in Brooklyn
QUEENS, NEW YORK: A 16-year-old boy is fighting for his life after being shot in broad daylight on Tuesday, April 9, in Queens, according to authorities.
This incident occurred just hours after an 11-year-old boy was shot in the Brownsville Houses in Brooklyn.
Insights into tragic shooting
The shooting of the older teen took place around 1.30 pm on Dickens Street near Mott Avenue in the Rockaways. The victim sustained gunshot wounds to the groin and left wrist.
Initially, he was transported to Cohen Children’s Medical Center in a stable condition. However, his condition deteriorated rapidly, and he was subsequently listed in critical condition by around 3.10 pm, reported New York Post.
Authorities have not provided details regarding the motive behind the violence or whether the teenager was specifically targeted. As of now, no arrests have been made, and there is no available suspect description.
Boy, 11, shot at NYC public housing complex
In another incident, an 11-year-old boy was shot inside a Brooklyn NYCHA building late Monday, April 8, with four other children as young as 6 nearby, according to authorities.
The injured child informed the police that he was on the third floor of a Brownsville Houses building on Howard Avenue near Atlantic Avenue around 11 pm when he sustained a gunshot wound to his left forearm, as reported by authorities and law enforcement sources.
Initially, the boy claimed he was shot outside the building by a hooded man. However, investigators discovered a blood trail leading back upstairs to an apartment, contradicting his account, stated NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny during a press briefing on Tuesday.
“We’re still sorting through it. At this point, it could be accidental, it could be self-inflicted. But we’re still looking through it,” said Kenny.
Several children and adults, including the boy's mother and children aged 6, 12, 14, and 17 years, were present inside the apartment, Kenny mentioned.
"We're trying to sort out whether they were playing with the gun," he explained. "Was it intentional, or was it unintended?"
A 9mm gun was recovered at the scene, Kenny confirmed.
The pre-teen, residing in the Pink Houses in East New York, was transported to Maimonides Medical Center, where he was listed in a stable condition.
