Brooke Shields reveals she got dating advice from 'confidant' George HW Bush during his term as POTUS
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Actress Brooke Shields opened up about her close relationship with the late former president George HW Bush during the New York Celebration of Reading event at the Lotos Club organized by Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, Fox News reported on Thursday, November 21.
The 59-year-old star admittedly considered the politician to be among her closest confidants and felt free to ask him about almost everything, including apparently dating advice.
What was Brooke Shield's nickname for George HW Bush?
According to the outlet, Brooke Shields considered George HW Bush to be her substitute grandfather. She even had a special name for him, sharing, "I call him Papa Bush. I was dating somebody (whose father) was an ambassador in Bermuda … He was my confidant about this boyfriend."
The revelation made Bush's granddaughter Lauren Bush, the host of the event, laugh out as she recalled, "He loved some good gossip."
Shields is known to have dated Kelly Gaines in the 1990s, whose father Eb Gaines was the head of the US consulate in Bermuda during Bush's term in the White House. She had described Gaines as a better kisser than John F Kennedy Jr back in 1991, telling Redbook magazine, "When I kissed him I got a tingly feeling in my tummy that I didn’t when I kissed John Junior."
The actress later went on to express how important George and Barbara Bush were to her, saying, "I don’t have really many relatives. He was that symbol to me. I looked up to her so much … Your grandparents for me were very important in my youth and in my life and in my dating days."
'Papa Bush' approved of Brooke Shield's present husband
Brooke Shields is presently married to film director Chris Henchy, who she claimed George HW Bush approved of before he died on November 30, 2018. She recalled a time that the former POTUS had invited the couple over when he found out that Shields was shooting for a movie near his family compound in Maine in 2010.
"I pick up the phone — no introduction or nothing. ‘Rumor has it, you’re close to Kennebunkport. If you do not come and visit me, young lady, you’re in big trouble,'" she shared. "I said, ‘OK sir, thank you. I’ll be there as soon as I can'. I call my husband, and I’m like, ‘We’ve got to go to Kennebunkport'."
"My husband arrives late, and I go, ‘You have to play golf'. I think he played three times in his life," continued the actress. "We get there, we get out and, of course, he’s playing with the sports commentator (Jim Nantz). Papa Bush gave him his clubs carved with every country, carved with monuments."
"I hear, ‘You’re in this cart with me, young lady'. He’s driving the cart. We’re driving around, and he’s like, ‘So, tell me how the relationship is. Good kids. I like the guy’ … My husband must have lost 40 pounds just from nerves."
