QUEENS, NEW YORK: Cory Martin, a 36-year-old pimp from New York, was convicted on Monday, March 4, for the brutal killing and dismemberment of Brandy Odom.
The crime, marked by its chilling details, was further tainted by Martin's attempt to fraudulently collect life insurance benefits in the victim's name.
Cory Martin's sinister plot driven by greed and inspired by crime shows
Prosecutors revealed that Martin, who managed Odom, a 26-year-old sex worker, meticulously planned the heinous act after fraudulently securing two life insurance policies in her name. Inspired by crime shows such as 'Dexter' and 'The First 48,' Martin sought tips on how to evade law enforcement, according to testimony from a co-conspirator during the two-week trial.
Breon Peace, the US attorney in Brooklyn, emphasized the severity of the crime, stating that the mandatory life sentence for the top charge of murder-for-hire is fitting for what he described as a "ghastly, cold-blooded crime" driven by greed.
Peace revealed Martin's disturbing perspective, stating, "Martin saw the victim as a moneymaker, trafficking her for commercial sex, then after killing her with his bare hands, tossing out her slaughtered body parts like trash so he could profit from her death," as per AP.
Charges in Brandy Odom's 2018 death expose twisted actions of Cory Martin and co-conspirator
In April 2018, the demise of Odom unfolded tragically as her body parts were found scattered in a Brooklyn park. This event subsequently resulted in charges being filed against Martin and the victim's co-conspirator, Adelle Anderson, who lived together in Queens.
Anderson, having pleaded guilty to charges related to the life insurance scheme and murder plot, testified in court that they watched true-crime shows for ways to avoid being caught.
Following Odom's death, the gruesome details unfolded as Martin and Anderson purchased cleaning supplies, covered their entire bathroom with heavy-duty black garbage bags, and dismembered the victim's body before disposing of it in Canarsie Park, as revealed in Anderson's testimony.
As the investigation ensued and the police discovered the scattered body parts, Martin conducted numerous internet searches for news articles, prosecutors reported. Despite several unsuccessful attempts to claim benefits under Odom's life insurance policies, Martin and Anderson eluded authorities until their eventual apprehension in 2020.
