WASHINGTON, DC: Donald Trump faced backlash after his campaign retracted a surprising promise he made to immigrant students.

On the Thursday, June 20 episode of the 'All-In' podcast, the former president said, "What I want to do and what I will do is you graduate from a college, I think you should get automatically as part of your diploma, a green card to be able to stay in this country. And that includes junior colleges, too."

Trump also noted that it was "so sad when we lose people from Harvard, MIT, from the greatest schools, and lesser schools that are phenomenal schools, also."

Donald Trump had previously made similar statements about green card access

This was not the first time, Trump made such claims.

In 2016, he stated that the nation needs "highly skilled people in this country," as per NBC News.

At the time, the former president remarked, "They’ll go to Harvard. They’ll go to Stanford. They’ll go to Wharton. As soon as they’re finished, they get shoved out. They want to stay in this country. They want to stay here desperately. They’re not able to stay here. For that purpose, we absolutely have to be able to keep the brainpower in this country."

Donald Trump's campaign says the US would also keep the ‘most skilled graduates’

On Friday, June 21, Trump campaign national press secretary Karoline Leavitt shared a statement that was opposite to what the 45th president had said on the podcast.

She stated, "President Trump has outlined the most aggressive vetting process in US history, to exclude all communists, radical Islamists, Hamas supporters, America haters, and public charges."

"He believes, only after such vetting has taken place, we ought to keep the most skilled graduates who can make significant contributions to America," declared Leavitt, before adding, "This would only apply to the most thoroughly vetted college graduates who would never undercut American wages or workers."

Internet reacts as Donald Trump's campaign retracts statement on green card access

The differences between Trump's and Leavitt’s statements were a sore point for many netizens who were quick to slam the former president.

One wrote, "Surprise, surprise. Politicians always looking for ways to spin their words without actually doing anything. He'll say whatever gets him votes, then backtrack when it's convenient. Nothing new here," and another noted, "He's such a loser."

A Facebook user sarcastically wrote, "Oh. Let me guess. he's going to do whatever Pres. Biden is doing/going to do since it is popular... And, of course, it was his idea; not President Biden's."

One more expressed, "Fool is resorting to throwing anything on the wall to see if Maga-ts eat it up."

Another person claimed, "I predict his campaign will have to 'walk back' more and more of the stream-of-conscious/word-salad that spews from his mouth over the next few months, as he becomes more and more desperate to win the election so he can defuse the federal cases against him *AND* to implement his planned dictatorship. The signs of stress are evident."

"Did he forget his own campaign position??" questioned an individual.
