WASHINGTON, DC: Following Michelle Obama's speech at the Democratic National Convention in August 2024, where she discussed income inequality, many social media users accused the Obamas of hypocrisy due to their substantial wealth.

Posts on Facebook circulated claiming that Barack Obama and Michelle owned “three mega-mansions, private jets, helicopters and yachts.” But how true are these allegations? Let’s break down the facts.

Do the Obamas own Mega-Mansions?

Although the Obamas own multiple properties, none of them meet the definition of "mega-mansions," typically considered homes over 20,000 square feet.

In 2005, the Obamas bought a 6,300-square-foot home in the Kenwood neighborhood for $1.65 million. While large, it doesn’t fit the “mega-mansion” description, according to Chicago Sun Times.

After leaving the White House in 2017, the Obamas purchased an 8,200-square-foot house in the Kalorama neighborhood for $8.1 million, the Los Angeles Times reported. This is their primary residence.

As per Vineyard Gazette, in 2019, they bought a 6,892-square-foot estate for $11.75 million. Again, a luxurious home, but not a massive mansion by industry standards.

Claims that the Obamas own "mega-mansions" are unfounded, as these are the only confirmed properties associated with the Obamas according to public records, Snopes reported.

Do the Obamas own private jets?

While the Obamas have chartered private jets for travel, there is no proof they own one. For example, during a 2023 trip to Australia, Barack Obama reportedly traveled aboard a chartered Bombardier Global 6000 jet, but this jet was not owned by the Obamas.

Although rumors have circulated that Michelle Obama owns a private jet, no evidence supports this claim. Searches of aviation databases found no records linking the Obamas to any private aircraft.

Do the Obamas own helicopters or yachts?

The claim that the Obamas own helicopters or yachts is also unverified. As president, Barack Obama used Marine One, the US military’s helicopter, for official duties, but there is no record of the Obamas owning a private helicopter.

Moreover, their properties, including their Martha’s Vineyard estate, lack a helipad, making it unlikely they own one.

Although the Obamas have been spotted vacationing on luxury yachts owned by friends, such as music mogul David Geffen’s $590 million yacht Rising Sun, these yachts are not owned by the Obamas.

No evidence to support claims of Obamas owning private jets, yachts, or mega-mansions

Social media rumors claiming that Michelle and Barack Obama own "three mega-mansions, private jets, helicopters, and yachts" remain unsubstantiated.

While it is well-known that the Obamas own three large properties in Chicago, Washington, DC, and Martha's Vineyard, there is no reliable evidence to suggest they own private jets or luxury yachts.

They do, however, have access to these through charters or connections, but ownership has not been proven.
