Former NY congressman George Santos attacked with coffee at Times Square in viral video

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Former New York congressman George Santos was the unfortunate victim of an airborne coffee attack in Times Square last month.
It all started with a video that’s been making the rounds on social media.

Coffee thrown at George Santos in Times Square
In the clip, an unnamed man rocking sunglasses filmed himself trailing Geoge Santos through the bustling streets of Times Square.
The man begins the clip with a snarky opening line, “This guy has got [the] audacity to show his face.”
Moments later, he throws what appears to be a cup of coffee at Santos and smugly asks, “How do you like that?”
Santos — never one to shy away from a confrontation — fires back by saying, “What the f*** is wrong with you?”
Judging by the news tickers flashing in the video background, this episode likely took place in November.
This is absurd! @MrSantosNY can’t even walk through the streets of NYC in peace anymore? pic.twitter.com/anQiQvh1LU

Despite the tense political climate, assaulting a public figure—no matter how polarizing—doesn’t exactly win hearts and minds. Critics from across the aisle condemned the attack.
Republicans Against Trump, a popular account on X (formerly Twitter), chimed in, "As much as we don’t like the guy, this is unacceptable. Stop assaulting people just because you disagree with them politically."
The comment appeared to reference the recent assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was reportedly gunned down outside of a Manhattan hotel earlier this month. The perp was later identified as Luigi Mangione, an outspoken critic of healthcare insurance carriers.

Many others on social media condemned the attack on Santos. "I disagree with George. Hell, you can dislike a guy all you want, but assaulting him when he did nothing to you is crazy," one user added.
"Not a fan of George Santos, but this is not okay. What is wrong with people? Why can't you disagree with someone without resorting to measures like this?" someone else wondered.
"And the bonehead shows his face on his own video before assaulting George. Assault is assault, and I hope he gets charged with it," another fumed.

"You can disagree with someone all you want. You can verbally express your anger and frustrations — we live in a free country. But assaulting someone is a crime. Just because you dislike someone doesn’t give you a free pass to act like an emotionally immature 2-year-old who is unable to control their short temper. People like this are dangerous and crazy. Sorry this happened to you, George," read a comment.
"This wasn’t about Santos, it’s about the filmed feeling better about himself. If he really felt that way, he wouldn’t need to film it for internet points," another offered.

George Santos is 'burying' his political career
Once a rising Republican star, George Santos was expelled from Congress in December last year—making him one of just six members in US history to be booted from the House. And what a resume he had leading up to that moment.
He has reportedly pleaded guilty to aggravated identity theft and wire fraud and admitted to stealing credit card information and lying to the Federal Election Commission. Furthermore, he owes over $300,000 in restitution to his victims.
Since his exit from Congress, Santos has been riding the wave of his notoriety. This month, he announced a new podcast — cheekily titled 'Pants on Fire'. In his words, he’s “burying” his political career, the Independent reported.
