MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: During a conversation with ‘Late Night’ host Seth Meyers on Wednesday, California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized his Republican counterpart, Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida, for the conservative policies he advocates.

Newsom suggested that DeSantis' policies are not just "anti-woke" as the governor claims, but are actually "anti-Black" in nature, stopping short of directly calling DeSantis a racist.

In a recent televised debate moderated by Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Newsom faced off against DeSantis.

A prominent supporter of President Joe Biden and a potential presidential candidate in 2028, Newsom hoped to showcase his political prowess on a national stage.

However, the debate quickly devolved into an unfair matchup, with both DeSantis and Hannity challenging Newsom's positions on various issues.

Despite his efforts, Newsom struggled to mount a direct response to DeSantis' arguments, and the debate turned into a contentious and messy affair.

What did Gavin Newsom disclose on ‘Late Night with Seth Meyers’?

During his appearance on Seth Meyers’s late-night talk show in New York City, the Democratic Governor expressed his opinions to his Republican counterpart, particularly his bid for the presidency.

Newsom said, “I’m not running for president. Ron DeSantis, apparently, still is.”

Governor Newsom criticized DeSantis for censoring facts, rewriting history, and discriminating against marginalized groups.

He asserted that DeSantis was targeting vulnerable communities and attacking minorities and women.

“I’ve developed a lot of animus toward him because of his animus toward all of you,” Newsom said addressing the studio audience. He continued, “This guy is scapegoating vulnerable communities. He’s attacking minorities, attacking women, and I don’t like it.”

"I wanted to push back against it," Newsom continued, referring to DeSantis' restrictive policies against transgender students and drag shows. "I felt like the party was a little timid on all this," he said.

Governor Newsom, who has repeatedly denied rumors of his own presidential aspirations, per Politico, expressed admiration for President Biden on the show and conveyed his belief that Democrats need to be more proactive in countering Republican narratives on cultural issues, such as gun control.

When asked by host Meyers about the pervasive homelessness in California, the high cost of the high-speed rail project, and the problems in his hometown of San Francisco, Governor Newsom dismissed the disparaging findings as a "doom loop" that has persisted since Nancy Pelosi became speaker.

Internet fires back at Gavin Newsom over his comment on Ron DeSantis

People on X weren’t impressed with Governor Gavin Newsom’s remark on his political rival Governor Ron DeSantis on 'Late Night with Seth Meyers'.

One X user said, “Give it up loser, everyone knows you are a slimy liar"

"I’d love to hear how well “woke” is working in California. We’re talking about lots of smash and grab robberies, rapidly increasing homelessness, and huge budget deficits. You seem to like these things," another user stated.

A user remarked, "Still butthurt over losing that debate, huh?"

One user questioned Newsom, "Your own state is a fu****g mess. Are you ever going to work? Or just hop on shows and talk about DeSantis all day?"

Another user quipped: "You sir, are a clown."

"It's absolutely vital that we prioritize attacking what Ron has stated. Who cares about addressing homelessness, the exorbitant cost of living, astronomical tuition fees at schools and universities, and numerous other critical issues faced by California? Your focus is a disgrace," a user tweeted.
