WASHINGTON: Senator Joe Manchin issued a warning on Sunday, December 17, 2023, saying that given the amount of support that former President Donald Trump has, Americans "should be concerned".

Moreover, several recent polls show Trump ahead of Biden in several states, including the battleground states of Georgia and Michigan. CNN's Jake Tapper questioned Manchin about the level of concern Democrats should have over President Biden's reelection campaign. Manchin hinted that the US democracy would be in jeopardy with another Trump administration.

Joe Manchin warns people of 'supporting Donald Trump'

“I think we all should be concerned about the support that Donald Trump has. And basically, he’s told us who he is. And when a person tells you who they are, you ought to believe them,” Manchin said on CNN’s 'State of the Union'.

“It’s not democracy as we know it, it’s not how the country has been able to survive through this experiment of ours for over 230-plus years. And here we are today now being threatened. Can democracy survive? We’ve gone through some tough times, Jake,” he added.

Manchin's remarks are in line with the worries expressed by other Democrats and Trump detractors who believe that Trump poses a threat to democracy.

According to a recent Associated Press and NORC Center for Public Affairs Research study, 62% of respondents think that the outcome of the 2024 presidential election might jeopardize democracy. Trump has attempted to turn the tables on his rivals in recent weeks by asserting that Biden poses a greater threat to democracy.

Despite his reservations, Manchin nevertheless urged Americans to have faith in American democracy.

“I look around the world and see basically where the trouble spots are, is where people have given up hope … they can’t get out of this quagmire of poverty. And we can’t let that happen in this country either. And that’s the thing that I’m concerned about,” he added.

Internet mocks Joe Manchin for his warning

Joe Manchin's warning was not taken seriously by many internet users who ended up mocking him. A user wrote, "Wonder if he knows he is contributing to the threat," while one said, "Also Joe Manchin: “So I’ll run for President/VP under No Labels with Mitt and we will hand over the White House to Trump.”"

A user also wrote, "Manchin helped this fascism take root and he’s now part of NoLabels to siphon votes from Biden," while one mentioned, "If Manchin runs in a third party, he will surely help to topple our democracy."

A user also mentioned, "Democracy can survive if Manchin gets out of the damn way and doesn't let his ego think he can beat Biden if he runs as an independent in 2024."
