LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Fans of 'The Simpsons' were left stunned this weekend as the show made a dramatic move by killing off a beloved supporting character.

On social media, an outpouring of sadness mixed with criticism emerged, with many feeling that this marked a decline in the show's quality and impact.

'The Simpsons' kills off Larry the Barfly

'The Simpsons' bid goodbye to one of its long-time characters, Larry the Barfly, on the Sunday, April 21, episode, as per The New York Post

Larry, a fixture at Moe's Tavern, was a familiar face for fans since the sitcom's debut episode in 1989. Alongside his friend Sam, this fictional regular became a favorite over the years, despite never taking the spotlight.

Voiced by Harry Shearer, known for his roles like Ned Flanders and Mr Burns, Larry's presence added to the colorful cast of characters.

In the Season 35 episode, 'Cremains Of The Day', viewers were hit with the news of Larry's death. It was a surprising turn for a character who, despite being around for decades, remained somewhat of a mystery.

But this time, there was a twist as Larry's full name was revealed posthumously as Lawrence Dalrymple. Homer and the gang delved into Larry's past, realizing they hardly knew anything about him.

It was a poignant moment that added depth to a character who had always been in the background, as per Daily Mail.

Internet reacts to Larry the Brafly's death

Numerous Facebook users gathered to mourn the loss of Larry, with one writing, "It was kinda shocking."

Another said, "Iv watched the simpsons since the day it aired first episode but i must say it needs to come to an end now befor it is fully dead ,no episode is funny anymore you can see the struggle for laughs , the comedy just is not there nomore has been done for many years real."

"RIP…. I don’t know how they can continue the show without him. He will be missed," expressed a person, while someone else added, "I don’t know why people watch a show, just to whinge and whine about it. They must get huge fun from ruining it for everyone who enjoys the show. I don’t like it, so I don’t watch it. Simple really."

"This is why I don't watch a single episode past 2000," complained a viewer.
