Reflecting on his struggle with Lyme disease, addiction, and the emotional toll it had, Bieber, who initially gained fame at a young age, described his decision to quit the habit.

The Canadian singer revealed that his security crew started checking his pulse every night to make sure he was still alive as his drug use got out of hand.

Bieber said, "I felt like I was dying. My security would come into my room at night to check my pulse—people don’t realize how bad it got, it was honestly terrifying," as per The Standard.

The 'Baby' hitmaker also talked about his morning ritual during those trying times, describing how he would wake up, take medication, and smoke marijuana immediately before doing anything else.

"It just got scary," Bieber added, considering the extent of his addiction.

In a documentary part, his wife Hailey Bieber—who recently gave birth to their first child—recalled the critical turning point, saying, "Justin and I weren’t really involved in each other’s lives until he made the decision to get sober and was trying to quit the drugs on his own."

Justin Bieber battled addiction alongside issues with his physical and emotional health. He has been transparent about receiving a Lyme disease diagnosis and the tremendous emotional and physical toll it took on him.

The 'Stay' singer said, "I basically said, ‘God, if you’re real, get me through this and I’ll do the rest.’ And I did—at least, I thought I did," describing how his faith helped him recover.

Though Bieber was able to stop using drugs, he never really acknowledged the underlying issues that led to his struggles.

"I got off the pills, but I never did the actual work," he said.

Bieber reaffirmed in an interview with Vogue how doing drugs had turned into a coping method for him.

He said, "Drugs put a barrier between me and what I was doing. It got really dark. There were times my security would come in late at night just to make sure I was still breathing."

The pop star previously took a break in 2020 to address "some of the deep-rooted issues" but later returned with a new album and US tour, per BBC News.

He claimed to use more potent drugs as a result of his inability to handle the demands of stardom. "I was young, like everybody in the industry and people in the world who experiment and do normal, growing up things," Bieber said at the time.
