ATLANTA, GEORGIA: A video of former Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan slamming Donald Trump has resurfaced where the Republican said the former president has the values of an “axe murderer.”

Duncan, also a CNN contributor, made the remarks while discussing Trump's legal quandary in the southern US state and elsewhere and also his enduring ascendancy in the GOP presidential primary.

The video, from August 28 of this year, featured Duncan on CNN’s ‘The Source’ where he opined on former Trump Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, who testified in a hearing earlier that day to decide whether his criminal case would be moved to federal court.

What is the context behind Geoff Duncan’s opinions?

Geoff Duncan was Georgia's Lieutenant Governor when Trump attempted to overturn his defeat to Joe Biden there in 2020, a criminal undertaking that is now the subject of 13 racketeering and conspiracy charges, per The Guardian.

Although, Trump denies wrongdoing over any of the criminal charges, nevertheless, he is also charged with federal election subversion (four counts), retention of classified material (40), and hush-money payments to a porn star (34).

Both Trump and Meadows, along with 17 others, were indicted in Atlanta for their roles in seeking to invalidate the state's 2020 presidential election.

Meadows' request to transfer his criminal election interference trial from Georgia state court to federal court was denied by an Atlanta federal appeals court, earlier this month.

Lawyers for Meadows argued that he was simply performing his duties, given his role as a federal official; however, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a previous federal district court order that denied the case's transfer from Fulton County Superior Court.

If the case had been moved, Meadows’ lawyers could have argued Meadows be given immunity from the criminal charges levied against him.

What did former Georgia Lt Gov Geoff Duncan say during the interview?

Host Kaitlan Collins asked Duncan, “One thing that someone highlighted today, Geoff, was how in his memoir that he wrote after leaving office, Meadows said his job as chief of staff was, he believed, to, ‘tell the most powerful man in the world when you believed that he was wrong,' but I mean, is it clear that Meadows didn’t do that when it probably mattered the most here?”

Duncan responded, “Well, he must’ve whispered it in his ear and not said it out loud because I certainly have never seen examples of him standing up to Donald Trump. I think it’s so interesting to continue to watch this play out like some sort of Ponzi scheme of lies that just kind of built. And if you look at their defenses at this point, it’s all technicalities.”

Speaking of the criminal charges and lawsuits that the former President has racked up, Duncan posited, “When you go on a two plus year crime spree from coast to coast, this is what, you know, a lot of folks are complaining about the calendars. When you have four trials to have to compete with on a calendar, you're not going to be able to skip certain days because it's your birthday, or skip certain days because you got a nail appointment. Right? You're going to have to actually go face the music.”

“And that's really what's playing out here as a Republican,” he continued. “The dashboard is going off with lights and bells and whistles telling us all the warning things we need to know, ninety-one indictments, fake Republican, $8 trillion worth of debt (from Trump’s time in the White House), everything we need to see to not choose him as our nominee, including the fact that he's got the moral compass more like an axe murderer than a president,” he added.

He concluded by issuing a stark warning for Republican voters, “We need to do something right here, right now. This is either our pivot point or our last gasp as Republicans.”

Internet applauds Republican voices slamming the former President

People on X gave their plaudits to former Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan for doing the right thing and standing up to an authoritarian figure within the GOP by the name of Donald Trump, as several others queued up to do his bidding.

"You’d think a simple country first mindset would be enough to convince people not to support a candidate who puts himself first. But alas, too many people have fallen for the con," another user remarked.

Another user said, "Going to be difficult given that the kool-aid has been getting even stronger after 7 yrs…"

"The fact that he boasts about sexually assaulting women is enough for me, seems like that should be enough for almost anyone to say someone is not fit for office," one user stated.

Another X user wrote, "Hats off to Geoff Duncan. Never too late, we have a big open tent and all who see reality are welcome. Thanks to Geoff, Gov Kemp, Mr Raffensberger and the State of Ga for putting country ahead of party."

One user tweeted, "They are finally starting to realize that he is not the calm, collected, person that can bring the country together. The GOP is clinging to toxicity. It can’t end well."
