ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA: Former secretary of state Hillary Clinton fiercely criticized ex-president Donald Trump and his campaign team following a contentious incident at the Arlington National Cemetery.

Clinton’s rebuke came after reports emerged of a clash between Trump’s team and a cemetery official, igniting a debate over respect for military veterans and adherence to federal regulations.

Donald Trump campaign staff's altercation with Arlington cemetery official

Former president Donald Trump visited Arlington National Cemetery, a revered site honoring nearly 400,000 American service members, on Monday, August 26, to honor the fallen.

He laid wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and paid a private visit to Section 60, where many of those, killed in the bombing at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul during President Joe Biden's botched Afghanistan evacuation, now rest. He was joined by family members of the fallen and two Marines who were injured in the attack.

However, the controversy erupted when a photographer affiliated with Trump’s campaign was reportedly seen in a restricted area designated for soldiers killed in recent conflicts. Federal law prohibits any election-related activities, including photography, within Army cemeteries.

Clinton’s sharp remarks were directed at Trump's lack of respect for veterans. “Has any presidential candidate shown less respect to our veterans than Donald Trump?” Clinton asked on Wednesday, August 28, highlighting the seriousness of the clash first reported by NPR.

Arlington cemetery officials 'physically block' Trump’s team

The altercation escalated when a cemetery official allegedly attempted to “physically block” Donald Trump’s team from proceeding.

Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung claimed the official was “clearly suffering from a mental health episode” and promised to release footage to support their account of the incident. However, as reported by The New York Times, the campaign did not provide the footage.

Senior Trump adviser calls Arlington Cemetery official 'a disgrace'

Senior Donald Trump adviser Chris LaCivita denounced the cemetery official as “a disgrace” and unfit for the “hallowed grounds of Arlington National Cemetery."

Meanwhile, Arlington officials have only confirmed that an incident occurred and that a report was filed, but have withheld further details to protect the identities involved.

Arlington officials have not disclosed their version of the clash, only stating that “there was an incident, and a report was filed.”

"To protect the identity of the individual involved, no further information about the incident is being released at this time,” reported a cemetery spokesperson.

The cemetery also noted that it had “reinforced and widely shared” with the Trump campaign the federal regulations prohibiting campaign activities by photographers “or any other persons attending for purposes, or in direct support of a partisan political candidate’s campaign.”
