Internet says LA Times' 'mean spirited' mistake of naming Trump in OJ Simpson obituary was deliberate
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The Los Angeles Times erroneously reported that former US President Donald Trump had served OJ Simpson’s prison sentence. The error was made in the obituary of the late NFL star.
Simpson, 76, died from prostate cancer at his home in Las Vegas. Simpson's family said that the former NFL player is survived by four children, Arnelle and Jason, from his first marriage, and Sydney and Justin, from his marriage to Nicole Brown.
LA Times namedrops Trump in OJ Simpson obituary
The Los Angeles Times reported on the death of the 76-year-old former NFL player on the morning of April 11, detailing his prolific sports career as well as his infamous 1994 double murder trial.
However, the obituary announced that former President “Trump” had been released from prison, replacing Simpson. The lines read, “Long before the city woke up on a fall morning in 2017, Trump walked out of Lovelock Correctional Center outside Reno, a free man for the first time in nine years," adding "He didn’t go far, moving into a 5,000-square-foot home in Las Vegas with a Bentley in the driveway."
I mean... there's no shot this wasn't intentional. https://t.co/PepfeIMIht%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E%26mdash; Joe Concha (@JoeConchaTV) April 11, 2024
Per Fox News, the line was later corrected with an editor’s note acknowledging the mistake. "An earlier version of this obituary incorrectly contained a typographical error that used the wrong name when describing Simpson leaving Lovelock Correctional Center. The error has been corrected," the note read.
The mistake by the newspaper quickly went viral with several people calling out mistake as intentional.
In his criminal trial, Simpson was notoriously declared not guilty of the gruesome 1994 killings of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. The families of the Goldman and Brown later sued him for wrongful death in civil court, and he was determined to be at fault.
Simpson was convicted of armed robbery in 2008 and sentenced to 33 years in prison, with a minimum of nine years before he was eligible for parole. Nine years later, Simpson was released from prison in October 2017.
