NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: A New York City cartoonist recently took his own life by jumping from a building while his girlfriend attempted to save him, leading the Internet to point out the horrors of dealing with depression.

As per the New York Post, the 62-year-old cartoonist identified as Jon Medwick jumped from his 15th-floor Chelsea co-op apartment, located at 300 West 23rd Street, on Tuesday, March 5.

Police say Jon Medwick was 'depressed'

Medwick not only worked as a cartoonist but also had a day job at WebMD.

A police insider told the New York Post that his girlfriend woke up to discover him standing near the window and tried to prevent him from jumping, but he managed to slip away. Subsequently, emergency services were called to the building around 5.45 am.

Medwick, a resident of the building for over ten years and a member of its co-op board was described by neighbors as friendly and sociable. One resident recounted, "His apartment is at the back of the building. From what they were saying he jumped from his apartment window."

His girlfriend, visibly distressed, was taken to the hospital after Medwick's death. As per the New York Post, another source mentioned, "I did see the girlfriend. She looked distraught. She kept saying her legs were hurting … I don’t know if she was nervous. EMS took her."

The cartoonist's brother was also at the building speaking with detectives on Tuesday, according to sources. The New York Post also noted that Medwick had started living with his girlfriend just before the Covid-19 pandemic hit and had a brother who would visit him.

He primarily worked from home, and sometimes clients would come to the building to collect their commissioned pieces. Police stated they did not suspect foul play in the fall and indicated that Medwick was "depressed" before the incident.
