LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: California Governor Gavin Newsom found himself in hot water as he apparently pinned blame on Republicans for amplifying the homeless crisis plaguing San Francisco.

On Wednesday, December 13, Newsom, who served as San Francisco's mayor from 2004 to 2011, appeared on 'Late Night with Seth Meyers' where the host asked him questions regarding the city, which has suffered a loss of citizens and businesses due to a rise in crime, especially burglaries, and homelessness.

During the episode, Meyers questioned Newsom on his approach to addressing the "very real problems" of drug overdoses and homelessness that have beset San Francisco.

In response, the 56-year-old Governor, who served as San Franciso’s mayor from 2004-11, claimed that “You own the issues, and then you start to address them.”

“Look, they've been on a doom loop about San Francisco ever since Nancy Pelosi became Speaker,” he added, according to Daily Mail.

What did Gavin Newsom say about San Francisco?

After declaring that he "owned" the issues, Newsom changed the subject and began discussing how prosperous his state was, omitting to address the issues at hand.

Citing California's high job growth rate as evidence, he called the state "the temple of the American recovery." 'It's values are a stark contrast - the difference is daylight and darkness - to the Republican party,' Newsom continued.

The Governor then expressed that San Francisco was “a special place”, and he was “defensive about it - like you guys in New York, during the holidays: there isn't anything like it in the world. It's beautiful.”

Meyers steered him back to San Francisco's problems, pointing out that the scarcity of housing and the reluctance of locals to accept new construction in their area was the root of the problem.

“You can't blame it on conservatives, this is often your own liberal support base,” said Meyers. Newsom nodded and said he was suing cities to force them to build more affordable housing.

Describing affordability as "the original sin in California," he stated an audit had been conducted and more housing was being constructed.

Newsom also claimed that they were investing in behavioral problems and mental health reform, saying they had got 68,000 people off the streets since he became governor and 6,000 encampments removed.

A large number of those camps were dismantled in preparation for last month's APEC meeting, which brought thousands of delegates and world leaders to the city, including Joe Biden and Xi Jinping.

Internet reacts to Gavin Newsom’s claims

Gavin’s remarks have garnered immense social media attention, with users slamming him for blaming Republicans for amplifying the homeless crisis plaguing San Francisco.

“Gavin now thinks he is a comedian,” one user said. “Yep, it's always someone else's fault. These traitors never hold themselves accountable for the damage they do,” the second user blasted.

“I heard that all the homeless drug addicts that Newsome spirited away for Xi's visit have returned and are defecating on San Francisco's sidewalks again!” the third user remarked.

“He got the same memo as all the other gaslighters. It probably came from Nancy,” the fourth user trolled while the fifth one said “Bet ole Gavin prepped & practiced that response speech in the mirror for days…”

“They just can’t take the blame for what they create. Just pathetic,” one more attacked.
