Internet split as Biden and anti-Trump Republicans join forces before debate and rip ex-prez over Jan 6
WASHINGTON, DC: On the eve of his first 2024 election debate with his recently convicted predecessor, President Joe Biden intensified his criticism of Donald Trump’s actions surrounding the January 6 attack on the Capitol.
Biden labeled Trump’s behavior as a desperate attempt to hold onto power, leading to the violent assault.
Biden campaign ropes in anti-Trump Republicans to take down Trump
Biden’s campaign unveiled an endorsement from former Republican congressman Adam Kinzinger, a member of the House committee that investigated the January 6 attack.
The announcement was followed by the release of a new advertisement featuring a Michigan sheriff criticizing Trump for his inaction during the three hours that his supporters violently attacked police officers at the Capitol. Later, Kinzinger appeared alongside Georgia’s former lieutenant governor, Geoff Duncan, and former Capitol police officer Harry Dunn at a news conference in Atlanta to show their support for Biden.
Duncan, addressing the media, remarked, “Going against the grain as a Republican supporting Democrat Biden for president is not easy. But I’m not really looking at this election through the lens of being a Republican. I’m looking through the lens of being an American.” He described Trump as “the morally bankrupt nominee” of the Republican Party and declared, “Enough is enough. The nightmare has to end, and it has to end now.”
Trump campaign officials did not respond to requests for comment. Trump has previously attacked both Kinzinger and Duncan, the latter of whom recently shared that he required armed guards after refusing to support Trump’s false claims about the 2020 election results in Georgia.
The press conference was held at the same location where Gabriel Sterling, a Republican and a top Georgia election official, warned in December 2020 that “someone’s going to get killed” if Trump continued to propagate false claims about the election, reported HuffPost.
Duncan has been vocal in urging his fellow Republicans to distance themselves from Trump, even comparing Trump’s moral compass to that of an axe murderer. He endorsed Biden last month after the GOP overwhelmingly chose Trump in its primaries.
Harry Dunn, who has been traveling with fellow officer Michael Fanone to Biden campaign events, recounted the violence he and his colleagues faced on January 6, noting that they were beaten by Trump’s supporters wielding pro-police flags. “Trump encouraged and continues to encourage political violence,” Dunn asserted.
Donald Trump's legal woes
Trump was impeached for inciting the January 6 attack, which occurred after he urged his followers to march on the Capitol to protest the certification of Biden’s victory. At a rally near the White House, Trump told his supporters to demand that lawmakers reject Biden’s win, warning them that they would lose their country if they didn’t “fight like hell.” Despite the impeachment, Senate Republicans refused to convict Trump, which would have likely resulted in a permanent ban on his running for federal office again.
Trump now faces two prosecutions related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, one federal and one in Georgia. Additionally, he is dealing with a federal indictment for refusing to return classified documents taken to his South Florida country club after leaving the White House. Last month, Trump became the first former president in American history to be convicted of a crime when a New York City jury found him guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to suppress a story about an affair with a porn actor before the 2016 election.
Trump is scheduled to be sentenced for these crimes on July 11, two weeks after the debate and just four days before the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where he is expected to receive the presidential nomination.
Internet split as Biden camp intensifies attacks on Trump ahead of debate
Social media users were divided after Biden campaign roped in Kinxinger and Duncan to intensify their criticism of Trump.
One user commented, "Huge, enormous respect for Kinxinger! A decent guy who knows how awful Trump would be for our country. I do not agree with his take on politics, but have such admiration for he, Cheney, Romey, etc. Republicans who have stuck to their guns and know that the future of our country does not belong in the hands of a divisive, crooked, felon, cheater, liar, bankrupt draining, disgusting person. I may even vote for the decent upstanding tough individuals."
Another one added, "Let's not forget the over 1 million unnecessary deaths from COVID during Trump's time in office due to his incompetence. Or his notes telling his employees to move and hide classified documents, or his bragging about getting rid of Roe vs Wade."
