WASHINGTON, DC: In an eyebrow-raising turn of events during the Republican primary debate on December 6, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie found himself at the center of controversy after a heated off-air confrontation with newscaster Megyn Kelly.

The incident unfolded after a contentious exchange with rival Vivek Ramaswamy over comments made on stage about former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, a fellow 2024 GOP hopeful.

Confrontation unveiled on social media

An observant audience member captured video footage of Christie approaching Kelly and the other debate moderators during a break following his clash with Ramaswamy. Kelly later revealed the details of their encounter, stating that Christie was visibly "p***ed."

"All over the internet last night was a video that went viral of somebody in the balcony filming Chris Christie coming over to yours truly during a break at the end of the first hour and kind of getting up in my grill," Kelly disclosed.

Christie's frustration reportedly stemmed from what he perceived as insufficient questioning. Kelly addressed this on her SiriusXM show, emphasizing that Christie's polling at a mere 2 percent warranted the allocation of questions.

"In no debate ever, and I've now done six of them, have we given as many questions to the guy who's at 3 percent as to the person who's in the lead, at least amongst the candidates on the stage," Kelly remarked. "I'm sorry, Gov. Christie. That's the way it is."

The former governor's national polling average, according to Real Clear Politics, stands at 2.5 percent. In response, Kelly assured Christie that he would receive more time in the latter half of the debate, a promise she claims to have fulfilled. "I said, 'We're coming to you. You're gonna be happy in the second hour,' which I lived up to," she asserted.

Kelly said Christie was "right" about being excluded. "And the reason that happened is because we let them fight in the first 40 minutes of the debate and therefore that comes at the expense of something," she explained. "It's all at the expense of something else that's coming."

Kelly defended the debate's structure, citing CNN's figures indicating nearly equal talk time for the candidates. Ramaswamy held the floor for 22 minutes, DeSantis got 21, Haley had 17, and Christie received 16 minutes and 52 seconds. "So he was a half a minute behind Haley, who's tied up there for number one," Kelly noted.

"So I don't want to hear it, frankly, we did right by him," the former Fox News host continued. "He got a ton of airtime. That's what he was mad about."

"I like the guy, but just to break some news on what people [are] speculating on ... they never like it when they don't get to speak," she added.

Social media shreds Chris Christie

Following Kelly's revelations, social media erupted with criticism hurled at Christie. Users took to platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to express their opinions.

"Be careful what you ask for, Chris. She destroyed you with a single question in the second hour. Complete annihilation. You're about as viable as Kamala now," one user posted.

"Honestly, nobody wants to hear what he has to say," another comment read.

While some commended Kelly for her "well-prepared" questions, others humorously weighed in on Christie's perceived discontent, with one user quipping, "As long as you don't give him a shorter stack of pancakes, you're safe."

"There’s a reason he’s last in the polls at 2%... No one wants to hear that windbag!" another user added.
