Nicko McBrain announces retirement after 42 years leaving Iron Maiden fans heartbroken

LONDON, UK: Iron Maiden fans were left heartbroken on Saturday, December 7, as iconic drummer Nicko McBrain announced his retirement from the band after an extraordinary 42-year journey.

McBrain, 72, joined Iron Maiden in 1982, replacing Clive Burr, and became an integral part of the band’s signature sound.

In a heartfelt statement shared on Iron Maiden’s social media channels, Nicko McBrain revealed that their performance in Sao Paulo, Brazil, would be his final gig with the group.



 

“After much consideration, it is with both sorrow and joy, I announce my decision to take a step back from the grind of the extensive touring lifestyle,” he said.

“Today, Sat, Dec 7th, Sao Paulo will be my final gig with Iron Maiden. I wish the band much success moving forward,” he shared.

Although stepping away from touring, McBrain assured fans that he remains part of the Iron Maiden family.

He will be involved in various projects alongside longtime managers, Rod Smallwood and Andy Taylor, while focusing on personal ventures, including his businesses, The British Drum Company, Nicko McBrain’s Drum One, Titanium Tart, and Rock-N-Roll Ribs.

“I look into the future with much excitement and great hope!” he wrote.

“I’ll be seeing you soon, may God bless you all, and, of course, ‘Up the Irons!’” he added.

Nicko McBrain's tribute to fans and loved ones

Nicko McBrain expressed deep gratitude for the support he has received throughout his career.

He thanked his fans, wife Rebecca, children Justin and Nicholas, friends, and bandmates, emphasizing their role in his remarkable journey.

“To my devoted fan base, you made it all worthwhile, and I love you! To my bandmates, you made it a dream come true, and I love you!” the drummer concluded.

Iron Maiden’s manager, Rod Smallwood, paid a touching tribute to Nicko McBrain’s legacy, calling him an “irrepressible force behind the drum kit” and a dear friend.

Smallwood reflected on the band’s countless memories with McBrain, from legendary gigs to shared achievements, and emphasized that the musician would always remain part of the Maiden family.

Smallwood also confirmed that a new drummer has been chosen, with an official announcement coming soon.

“Nicko, thank you for being an irrepressible force behind the drum kit for Maiden for 42 years... The band and I all have a thousand great memories of the past 42 years. Such a bond is forever!” he stated.

Iron Maiden's upcoming tour without Nicko McBrain

Nicko McBrain’s retirement means he will not join Iron Maiden on their 50th anniversary UK tour in 2025.

The highly anticipated tour will kick off on May 27 in Budapest, Hungary, and feature 27 shows across Europe, including stadiums, arenas, and festivals, according to Daily Mail.

Fans call Nicko McBrain's retirement 'incredibly sad'

After Nicko McBrain announced his retirement, fans paid tribute to the legendary drummer.

One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, "End of an era! You gave so much, inspired so many people...time for yourself! All the best!" and another tweeted, "I knew this day would come eventually, but it's still incredibly sad. Nicko is awesome. Thanks for all the great music."
