GARLAND, TEXAS: Garland law enforcement is presently investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Saturday, January 20, resulting in the death of a 33-year-old man.

According to Police investigators, the incident unfolded following an escalated argument over a dog between two neighbors.

The suspect has been arrested

The Garland Police Department has charged 18-year-old Isaiah Kellough with murder, according to their official statement.

The shooting occurred shortly after 7:30 p.m., with police suspecting that a confrontation over a dog initiated the incident between neighbors in the 1600 block of Running River Road.

The Garland Police Department utilized their social media account on X (formerly known as Twitter) to disseminate additional details through a news release.

"From what we know, [the argument] appears to be over a dog," Garland Police Department PIO Matt Pesta said. The fight then escalated to a shooting.

Who was the victim?

Upon the arrival of officers at the scene, they discovered 33-year-old Rontarious Hamilton, the victim, with a gunshot wound. Despite being transported to the hospital, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Following discussions with family members and witnesses, the police apprehended Kellough in connection with the shooting. As per WFAA, the police stated that Kellough was not initially known to be part of the dispute.

According to their account, Hamilton was engaged in an argument with one of Kellough's family members. Investigators said it’s still unclear how Kellough got involved.

"Once you take that path, you can’t backtrack. That’s exactly what happened here. It’s sad, all the way around, for everybody involved," Matt Pesta said. Additionally, the police are working to find out why Kellough decided to fire the gun.

"Permanent outcome to a temporary situation and you've got multiple families involved here that are in pain. You obviously have the deceased, and then you have the shooter’s family," Pesta said. Hamilton’s family said he leaves behind two children.
