NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Jaclyn Elmquist, a 24-year-old Brooklyn resident was found "unconscious and unresponsive" in the basement of a West 28th Street Manhattan building on December 1, stated the New York Police Department.

The discovery in the garbage compactor of the building was made by officials who responded to a call at around 2.40 pm that day. Emergency medical services declared Elmquist dead at the scene, reported People.

Official statement on the death of Jaclyn Elmquist

A spokesperson for the Deputy Commissioner of Public Information stated, "A preliminary investigation determined the deceased's injuries are indicative of having fallen down the garbage chute."

"There is no criminality suspected at this time and the investigation remains ongoing," they added.

The NYPD has not yet revealed the cause of the death of Elmquist, which is to be determined by the medical examiner's office.

Surveillance video from outside the building where Elmquist's body was found shows her unsteadily heading down the sidewalk before going in.

A police source reportedly told the New York Post, "It hasn’t been determined if she was intoxicated but it’s a possibility. It’s being looked at.”

Sources at NBC New York stated that officials are also investigating whether the death of Elmquist is connected to a missing person's case where a woman in her 20s was last seen getting into a cab at a nearby restaurant.

The deceased used to work at a recruiting company Mission Staffing. When she failed to return home after attending a work party in Manhattan, her cousin Katlyn posted on X (formerly Twitter) asking for information.

She wrote, "My cousin Jackie Elmquist has been missing since last night after she left a work party in Manhattan- she didn’t come home or show up for work this morning please spread the word so people in the area can see it since all of her family lives here in Minnesota."

Elmquist’s grandfather, John Elmquist, told the Post, "At this point, we don’t know any more than you do, I guess…My son and his daughter are in New York now and we’re waiting to hear from them."

When contacted, James Elmquist, the father of the deceased, told the publication that he had recently arrived in the city and had yet to see his daughter.
