WASHINGTON, DC: During a Sunday morning segment on CNN's 'State of the Union', Jake Tapper engaged in a heated debate with Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR), who accused Vice President Kamala Harris of antisemitism and a lack of support for Israel.

The conversation shifted dramatically when Tapper challenged Cotton's claims, emphasizing Harris' personal connections to the Jewish community.

Jake Tapper and Tom Cotton clash over Kamala Harris' antisemitism stance

The clash began when Tom Cotton claimed, “Kamala Harris has consistently been the most anti-Israel voice,” leading Jake Tapper to counter, “Her husband is Jewish!”

This remark emphasized Tapper's argument that Harris has a personal commitment to combating antisemitism, given her husband's involvement in initiatives addressing the issue.

Cotton pressed on, asking, “When was the last time Kamala Harris spoke about combating antisemitism?” However, Tapper shifted the focus to former President Donald Trump's controversial comments implying that Jews could be blamed for his potential electoral loss in November.

The discussion was ignited by video clips of Trump's speech at the Israeli American Council (IAC) National Summit, where he stated, “Any Jewish person that votes for her [Vice President Kamala Harris] especially now, or the Democrat Party should have their head examined.”

He also remarked, “If I don't win this election...in my opinion the Jewish people would have a lot to do with the loss.”

Jake Tapper challenges Tom Cotton on Donald Trump's antisemitic comments

Jake Tapper, who is Jewish and has personally encountered antisemitic remarks, confronted Tom Cotton, asking, “Are you comfortable with that? With Donald Trump saying if he loses preemptively it's the fault of the Jews, a group already experiencing a rise of antisemitism in this country?”

Cotton deflected the question, instead urging voters who prioritize Israel to choose Trump over Harris, repeatedly insisting they should “vote for him and not Harris.”

Despite Tapper's insistence that his questions were about American Jewish voters—who “vote for any number of reasons on any number of issues”—Cotton maintained his focus on Harris' purported anti-Israel position.

Cotton claimed, “Joe Biden has not backed Israel very much over the past 11 months, Kamala Harris has been much worse. Harris has consistently been the most anti-Israel voice in this administration.”

In response to the ongoing conflict, Harris recently expressed her support for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas while also affirming Israel's right to defend itself.

She emphasized that "how it does so matters," particularly in light of the devastating October 7 attack by Hamas, which resulted in significant casualties.

Jake Tapper highlights American Jewish Committee's condemnation of Donald Trump's remarks

As the conversation progressed, Jake Tapper cited a statement from the American Jewish Committee condemning Donald Trump's remarks. The statement read, “Setting up anyone to say 'we lost because of the Jews' is outrageous and dangerous. Thousands of years of history have shown that scapegoating Jews can lead to antisemitic hate and violence.”

The conversation also addressed North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson, who is running for governor amid allegations of past racist and sexist comments.

Cotton acknowledged the allegations as “concerning” but insisted that the primary focus should remain on the presidential race.

When Tapper asked whether Trump should continue supporting Robinson, Cotton replied, “I'll leave that to [former] President Trump and, most importantly, to the people of North Carolina.”
