John Honore: Louisiana teen sentenced to life in prison for the carjacking and killing of a grandmother
NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA: A Louisiana teenager, convicted of the carjacking and killing of a grandmother whose arm was severed when she was thrown from her vehicle, caught in her seat belt, and dragged was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
18-year-old John Honore came to know his fate on Friday, January 12, in the death of Linda Frickey, 73. He’ll be eligible for parole in 25 years.
What did the victim's family say?
“When you take your last breath, may the only thing you hear be the hellhounds coming for you, to drag your a– back down to where you belong,” Kathy Richard, Frickey’s sister-in-law, said from the witness stand, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported. “Personally, I hope you don’t make it out of there [prison], and that those hellhounds come after you quick.”
Jinnylynn Frickey, Frickey’s sister, said outside court, “We got justice. He got what he deserved.” Honore had an unstable and abusive childhood, his attorney and family members said.
When were the authorities called?
According to local CBS affiliate WWL-TV, Angela Robertson recalled when he had gone to the police for help. “They called me to pick him up, and he begged me to let him come live with me,” she said. “Due to circumstances, I couldn’t take him in.” She said through tears that if she had, “we wouldn’t be here right now.”
Honore was found guilty of second-degree murder. Three others, Briniyah Baker, 17, Lenyra Theophile, 16, and Mar’Qel Curtis, 16, pleaded guilty to attempted manslaughter charges and were sentenced to 20 years in prison.
When did the crime take place?
The killing happened on March 21, 2022. Police responded officers responded to a carjacking call at about 1.35 pm. Once there, police found Frickey’s body on the ground, her arm severed, prosecutors said in a news release.
Prosecutors said Honore punched and kicked Frickey, forcing her from her Nissan SUV, in the armed carjacking. She became tangled in her seat belt, causing her arm to be severed from her body and dragged. Prosecutors said Honore led the attack while Theophile and Baker were in the SUV as Honore drove away and Curtis fled within seconds, NOLA.com reported.
The SUV was found later in the day. Surveillance video showed four people believed to be the perpetrators. After police circulated the photos through media, the mother of one of the 15-year-old female suspects turned her daughter in.
Officers arrested the male suspect later that evening and a second female suspect after receiving information from the male suspect’s parents. The remaining female suspect surrendered later.
Frickey’s widower has filed a lawsuit against the teens’ parents, local ABC affiliate WGNO reported. Frickey was a dedicated agent for Security Plan Life Insurance for 28 years.
