WASHINGTON, DC: A video clip of Vice President and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris has resurfaced online where she is seen discussing the government taking away patents from drug companies to lower the cost of medicines, reported Mediaite on Saturday, August 17.

The clip is from a CSPAN video of a campaign event in Iowa in 2019 when then-Senator Harris was running for the White House. In the video, Harris argued for a “fair market” price for drugs that would be determined by the federal government based on an average of the cost worldwide.

Kamala Harris' statements on lowering drug prices

“We are going to set drug prices based on fair market,” Kamala Harris had insisted during her first presidential campaign. “So, essentially what we’re going to do – and you can visit the website if you will, and if not, get you some documents – but essentially what we’re going to do is set drug prices so that American consumers are charged a price for drugs that’s the average price that’s being charged around the globe.”

In the resurfaced clip that has now gone viral, Harris is seen saying that companies that would not comply with her plan would be stripped of their patents if they had ever received any federal funding.

“For any drug where they fail to play by our rules, and if that drug came about from federal funding for what’s called ‘R and D', research and development, I will snatch their patent so that we will take over,” she said. “Yes, we can do that!"

"The question is, do you have the will to do it? I have the will to do it,” added Harris.

Internet calls Kamala Harris a 'dictator'

Filmmaker Eric Abbenante was reportedly one of the first to share the video on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and call Kamala Harris a 'dictator,' leading many others to criticize the 2024 nominee.

"Dictator Kamala Harris discussing government takeover of companies' patents," Abbenante captioned his post, adding, "The party frightened about the 'threat to our democracy' is nominating a wannabe tyrant."

“Well, this is crazy,” Gov Greg Abbott (R-Texas) retweeted.

"Kamala says she will use the government to steal companies' patents... That's what communist dictators do. She's not just a bad candidate... she hates America and freedom. This video should scare you and needs to be shared everywhere," wrote conservative comic Tim Young.

"She is the queen of bad ideas," jibed a former GOP communications staffer.

"Is this even legal?" inquired another, sharing the clip.

"Scary this woman is so close to being President," noted one.

"Spoken like a true Commie," chided yet another.
