PENSACOLA, FLORIDA: Keith Eric Agee, 20, was found guilty of killing his toddler's mother, Brooklyn Sims, 18, and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Agee attacked Sims at her Home Depot job because he thought she had given him an STD. Studies, however, showed that Sims was not afflicted with this kind of disease.
Keith Eric Agee's mother pushed him to kill Brooklyn Sims
The defendant's mother, Sheila Agee, 50, is being prosecuted for her purported involvement in the crime. She is charged with talking about deleting the evidence and pushing her son to carry out the murder.
Before Sheila Agee was arrested for first-degree murder, she attended a balloon release in Sims' honor, Shore News Network reported.
According to officials in Florida's Escambia County, Keith Agee was furious as he thought that Sims had given him an STD. He claims that his mother, who was employed at the victim's Home Depot, encouraged him.
Deputies said she texted, "Ok I’ll call you and tell you mf if you want to go to jail, I’ll tell you when we get close but if you don’t come kill her you. Don’t call nanny and tell her she will try and talk you out of it.”
They allegedly talked about erasing the transcript of their conversation as well. She allegedly texted, "Hold up let me get it erase the texts because I don't want nobody to know I was texting you stupid a**."
The incident, which took place in Escambia County, serves as a stark reminder of the damaging effects of false information and incorrect beliefs.
Authorities described in detail the series of events that culminated in the tragic event, including the alleged involvement of the suspect's mother.
As the community struggles to deal with the loss and the circumstances surrounding it, attention to the case keeps growing.
Sheila Agee attended a balloon release in Sims' honor prior to being arrested for first-degree murder. Keith Agee's defense team argued during the trial for a lesser charge. Agee was charged with first-degree murder.
Pensacola ABC affiliate WEAR reports that the defendant testified on Tuesday, December 19, that he tested positive for an STD a few days after having sex with Sims.
Prosecutors, however, had provided proof that Sims was STD-free. She emailed Sheila Agee a photo from a doctor's visit on August 5 that proved she didn't have the illness.
State Attorney Bridgette Myers Jensen reportedly said according to WEAR, “I know in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t matter. But we just wanted to give Miss Sims a little bit of dignity.”
Keith Eric Agee admitted his crime
According to his testimony, on August 11, 2023, Keith Agee drove 90 minutes to the Home Depot store where Sims and his mother worked, after leaving his job feeling angry, hurt, and deceived. He also took his gun from home. He claimed that after learning about Sims' whereabouts from his mother, he went up to the victim.
He said that although his anger had initially subsided on seeing her, it came back when she left him in the middle of a conversation. Agee said, "I pointed my finger at her and said, ‘You gave me something'," according to Law&Crime.
He added," She said, 'Not this again', and turned around and proceeded to walk off from me. I’ve never been so mad in my life. … I pulled my firearm from my waistband and I proceeded to shoot Brooklyn.” According to his testimony, if she hadn't turned and walked away from him, he would not have shot her.
According to 'The Pensacola News Journal', two of Sims' co-workers testified that they heard Agee tell her she "gave him something" prior to the gunshots. Michael Benson, one of them, claimed that when Agee first approached Sims, he was already carrying a gun.
“Textbook definition of premeditated murder because you got mad and blamed her for something, in disgusting irony, that wasn’t even her fault,” the judge said in reference to the shooting, on Wednesday, December 21.
The judge added, "And you would have found that out if you had taken any time to think about it."
