COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA: Fox News anchor Neil Cavuto questioned Rep Nancy Mace (R-SC) about recent criticisms from her colleagues, suggesting that many perceive her as a "narcissist".

Cavuto referenced a Washington Post article that called the South Carolina congresswoman a “narcissist” while asking her why that might be a feeling shared by her GOP colleagues in the House of Representatives.

Nancy Mace is proving hard to deal with

Cavuto told Mace in his interview, “You've certainly gotten a lot of people's attention, but a lot of your colleagues just don't know what to make of you.”

The host elucidated his aforementioned claims by saying, “There was a time that you liked Kevin McCarthy, then you didn't, that you liked and supported Steve Scalise, and then you didn't. Right now, you say you're with Mike Johnson. That's great, but they don't trust you.”

He asked Mace, “In fact, there's this Washington Post story that says, how do you talk to a narcissist? A lot of people feel that you're a narcissist. It's all about Nancy Mace. What do you say?”

Responding to Cavuto’s allegations, Mace said, “Politics sure is an ugly business, isn't it, Neil? And when you are on the rise, people are going to attack you no matter what. And I didn't read the Washington Post article. I quite frankly don't care what the Washington Post thinks about me.”

She added, “I care about what my constituents and my state and the people across this country that I'm trying to support. I care what they think. I don't serve Washington. I don't just serve Washington Post. I serve the people of South Carolina, and that's where we're going to keep it.”

In the same interview, Cavuto explicitly named the people who’ve had a problem with the budding GOP lawmaker, asking, “What is it, congresswoman, between you and Kevin McCarthy right now? He says you deserve to lose your re-election bid, doesn't like the way you behave. Your colleagues are increasingly saying they don't know whether to trust you or know where you're coming from. The Washington Post says Maverick or a MAGA warrior? Nancy Mace tries to be both. What's going on?"

Mace timidly defended herself, saying, “Well, I certainly haven't given any of my colleagues or the country a reason not to trust me. I certainly would never elbow someone in the kidneys and run away like a schoolboy in the schoolyard in kindergarten.”

In an interview with CNN, outgoing GOP House Speaker Kevin McCarthy revealed, “I think the two that were really different than all the others were Tim Burchett and Nancy Mace. The others hadn't voted for me before. Anyways, they were disruptors the whole time.”

“What about them surprised you? Burchett and Mace?” the interviewer asked McCarthy, to which he replied, “It seemed out of nature, but they seemed to have changed during the time. They care a lot about press, not about policy, and so they seem to just want the press and the personality.”

Nancy Mace's history of rubbing Republicans the wrong way

Rep Mace also rescinded her support towards Rep Steve Scalise for Speaker of the House because of previously reported comments comparing himself to a Ku Klux Klan leader.

Mace told CNN's Jake Tapper at the time that she "personally cannot, in good conscience, vote for someone who attended a white supremacist conference and compared himself to David Duke."

Mace was referring to a 2014 New York Times article about former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard David Duke's politics, in which the publication stated that Scalise told a Louisiana-based political reporter that he was "like David Duke without the baggage."

Previously, Mace condemned anti-abortion measures that do not specifically allow exceptions for rape and incest, or one that does not provide options for women needing OBGYN treatment.

She implored her Republican colleagues to stop burying their "heads in the sand" and move more to the center on abortion if they want to start winning elections again.

"We need to find a middle ground on this issue, and I have a great pro-life voting record," she said during an appearance on ‘Fox News Sunday’.

"But some of the stances we take and especially when it comes to rape and incest, protecting the life of the mother, it's so extreme that middle, independent voters, right of center, left of center, they cannot support us."
