JOLIET, ILLINOIS: Kyleigh Cleveland-Singleton, 21, is accused of allegedly lying to the police to protect her boyfriend Romeo Nance, 23, who went on a shooting spree in Joliet, Illinois on Sunday, January 21.
Nance killed eight people, including seven of his family comprising his mother and teenage sisters and wounded another man in what police called a “reign of terror.”
Cleveland-Singleton, who has a three-year-old son with Nance, faces one count of obstructing justice, according to ABC News.
How did Kyleigh Cleveland-Singleton cover up for her shooter boyfriend Romeo Nance?
Police said Cleveland-Singleton made statements to detectives on January 22 that were intended to “prevent the apprehension of the suspect and obstruct this investigation.”
She was questioned by police on the day after when they found her and her son at a home in Plainfield. Police were looking for the boy, who they believed might have been with Nance.
The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed her statements and approved the charge of obstruction of justice. She was expected to appear in court on Thursday, January25, at 9 am, NBC News reports.
Romeo Nance killed seven of his family members
Nance was identified by police earlier this week as the suspect in the shootings at four different locations in Joliet.
He first shot and killed a man, 28-year-old Toyosi Bakare, who had moved to the US from Nigeria three years ago, at an apartment complex.
He then went to two homes on Davis Street and one on Pheasant Run Lane where he killed seven of his relatives. They were his mother, Tameka Nance, 47, and his uncle, William Esters II, 25, and aunt Christine Esters, 38. His brother, Joshua Nance, 31, and sister Alexandria Nance, 20, besides two teenage sisters aged 16 and 14, as reported by US Sun.
Kyleigh Cleveland-Singleton was inside the house on West Acres Road when Romeo Nance killed his mother and uncle
Joliet Patch reported that Cleveland-Singleton was inside the house at 2225 West Acres Road when Nance killed his mother and uncle.
Nance then fled to Texas where he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a standoff with police outside a gas station in Natalia on Monday night, January 22.
Police believe that Nance stopped at a Texas mall and was able to get his hands on Texas license plates which he put on his vehicle to try to throw authorities off of this trail.
The publication reported it was unclear if she was present at the locations where Romeo Nance's sisters were killed or whether Cleveland was outside in the car.
"We can't get inside his head. We just don't have any idea any clue as to why he did what he did," said Joliet Police Chief Bill Evans, as per US Sun.
He called it "the worst crime scene" he has "ever been associated with."
