OMAHA, NEBRASKA: After her boyfriend's large-breed dog viciously attacked her disabled daughter, a Nebraska mother attempted to cover up her bloody clothes. She and her partner were both arrested for obstruction, and the mother is still being held in custody.
Lillianna Stratman, 4, was bitten by a Cane Corso Mastiff mix just after 2.00 pm on February 20, resulting in horrific injuries that include her scalp being ripped off.
Lillianna Stratman's mother tried drawing attention away from the incident
According to Lillianna's family, she is no longer in critical care but still has a long recovery ahead of her.
When Omaha Police responded to a call about a child bitten by a dog, they discovered that the girl's mother, 25-year-old Danielle Stratman, had tried to hide her clothes under a bed in an attempt to draw attention away from the incident, according to KETV.
The dog, which belonged to Stratman's 42-year-old boyfriend Greg Preister, was eventually located by animal control. The Nebraska Humane Society euthanized the dog after it was willingly surrendered.
“We immediately euthanized the dog and sent the tissue out for testing due to the severity of the injuries and where they were located,” Pam Wiese with NHS told the station. “It needs to be expedited because the injuries were very close to the brain.”
Lillianna's great-aunt, Kimberly Lane Koterba, started a GoFundMe page to assist with the family's high medical expenses.
“She is 4 years old and her scalp was torn off, her cheekbone was broken, she has torn ligaments in her neck and stitches all over her body,” the fundraiser reads in part.
It further stated, “She is now out of ICU but will possibly [be] having another surgery later this week. Many more to follow. She’s also going to need therapy for the trauma.”
Greg Preister and Danielle Stratman were taken into custody
Koterba also mentioned Lillianna's birth defect, spina bifida, which impacts the development of the spinal cord. By Sunday afternoon, almost $8,000 had been raised through the GoFundMe.
For obstruction, Preister and Stratman were both taken into custody. Police said that after being arrested for domestic assault and child abuse last month, Stratman was subject to a judge-mandated no-contact order that prevented her from seeing her daughter.
Preister, whose criminal history of theft dates at least to 2006, according to public records, was also cited for harboring a dangerous dog and for causing property damage with him.
Stratman is still being held at the Douglas County Correctional Center on a $150,000 bond. As of writing, Preister's bail status was unknown.
It was unclear if either had retained attorneys. Omaha Police did not respond to the request for comments immediately on Sunday, March 10.
