NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Former congresswoman Liz Cheney expressed her belief about former President Donald Trump, calling him "dangerous" in an exclusive interview with ‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie.

She admitted that if Trump were to be reelected for a second presidential term, he might refuse to leave office, suggesting that voting for him again "may mean the last election that you ever get to vote in."

Cheney, a lifelong Republican who parted ways with the party after leading the House of Representatives committee investigating the January 6 attack on the Capitol, discussed the perceived threat of a potential second Trump presidency.

She joined Guthrie to talk about her new memoir ‘Oath and Honor’ as she reflected on the risk Trump could have on democracy if he is reelected in 2024.

Liz Cheney calls Donald Trump ‘dangerous’ on ‘Today’ show

In Liz Cheney’s new book, ‘Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning,’ contends that the significance of the 2024 election lies in determining whether the United States will retain its democracy.

She told Savannah Guthrie, “It certainly is. And Donald Trump has told us exactly what he will do. He will not abide by the rulings of the courts. He will certainly appoint people to office whether or not they can be confirmed by the Senate.”

Cheney continued, “He has talked about using the military in terms that really are fundamentally un-American. ... So it's a very dangerous moment, and it's a moment for people to understand that that cannot be the path that we go down as a country."

Cheney, the daughter of former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney, holds the belief that if Trump were to be reelected, he might attempt to establish himself as a permanent president, refusing to vacate office even after the constitutionally mandated two-term limit.

She said, “There’s no question. Absolutely. He’s already done it once. ... He’s already attempted to seize power, and he was stopped, thankfully, and for the good of the nation and the republic. But he said he will do it again. He’s expressed no remorse for what he did."

In the context of a potential election showdown between Trump and President Joe Biden, Cheney addressed the significance of a small group of undecided voters in swing states.

When she was questioned about voters who might believe that casting a vote for Trump would not have enduring consequences on the state of democracy, she said, “I think that’s a real problem, and I think that the challenge is to make sure that those people understand and recognize that a Trump vote is not acceptable.”

She said, "I hope that there are options and alternatives that reflect the important challenges that we’re facing, and that reflect leadership to meet those challenges, but that choice can never be Donald Trump because a vote for Donald Trump may mean the last election that you ever get to vote in.”

"And again, I don’t say that lightly, and I think it’s heartbreaking that that’s where we are, but people have to recognize that a vote for Donald Trump is a vote against the Constitution."

Liz Cheney warns Trump's reelection will be an 'assault' on fundamental principles

Despite her lifelong commitment to Republican politics, Liz Cheney emphatically states that she will “never vote for Donald Trump.”

Cheney vowed to “do whatever it takes to make sure that Donald Trump is defeated in 2024.”

Additionally, Cheney asserts that a potential second Trump presidency would constitute an assault on the fundamental principles and foundations of the country.

She said, “He won’t support and uphold the Constitution. We’ve already seen what happened. He is the only president in American history who attempted to overturn an election, who attempted to seize power, to stay in power after he had lost.”

“The reason that we didn’t have a much more serious crisis was because there were people around him who stopped him."

She continued, “We won’t have that safeguard again and he’s so dangerous. If you have a president who is unwilling to abide by the rulings of the courts, who’s unwilling to uphold the Constitution, then there are no guardrails who can stop him."

Cheney also tackled the notion that the existing checks and balances, including Congress, would serve as safeguards to curb any attempts by Trump to consolidate power.

She said, “The notion that we would be OK, I think, is naïve.”
