Authorities recovered a firearm near the deceased man, according to the NYPD. A spokesperson for the NYPD stated on Saturday afternoon that an autopsy would be conducted, adding, "It appears to be a murder-suicide."

Who is Luz Espinal?

Neighbors and the building's superintendent revealed that Espinal, a former home care aide, was a mother to two grown sons and a 7-year-old girl. She resided in the first-floor apartment where the tragedy took place.

According to them, Espinal had recently started dating a man described as "very controlling," who even compelled her to erase her presence from social media platforms.

Superintendent Santos Araujo expressed sorrow, stating, “It’s very sad, we are all like a family in this building,” He described Espinal as a very cheerful woman but mentioned that the man seemed antisocial. Araujo added, "I  never liked the guy. He wasn’t friendly, he was weird.”

What did Superintendent Araujo report?

On Friday, Espinal's daughter was left at school, prompting her sister from the Dominican Republic to reach out to Superintendent Araujo for assistance in contacting Espinal, to no avail.

Upon investigation, neither Araujo nor his wife could locate Espinal, although they heard her dog whimpering inside the apartment. Araujo's suspicion grew when Espinal's son arrived and discovered the situation by looking through the windows.

Araujo mentioned that the couple had been together for only a short time, noting a significant change in Espinal's demeanor.

He observed that the once lively woman, who frequently entertained with karaoke sessions, had become noticeably different since meeting the man.

The superintendent described Espinal as a popular figure in the building who had ceased her musical activities in December.

The following day, a small memorial adorned with candles was placed near Espinal's apartment in remembrance of the victim.
