Nikki's protective instincts for her family were on display during the GOP presidential primary debate in November 2023. Michael's journey has been marked with challenges, from enduring a difficult childhood, marked by foster care due to his biological father's struggles, to being adopted by Bill and Carol Haley. Nikki credits Michael's life story for influencing her anti-abortion stance, stating, "I'm pro-life because I get a chance to spend every day with the love of my life knowing that I am blessed that someone saved his life."

Michael was dating someone when he met Nikki in college. Despite his relationship, their connection deepened. Nikki recounted how her future husband was attending a party with his girlfriend but kept coming over to talk to her. "I wanted no part of it, but I thought it was funny that every time she walked away he came over to check on me," she wrote in 'Can't Is Not an Option'. The following week, they split up. Nikki and Michael got together shortly after and were inseparable from that point on.

Nikki Haley's conversion to Christianity

Born to immigrants Ajit Singh and Raj Kaur Randhawa from India, Nikki was brought up in the Sikh faith. When she and Michael tied the knot in 1996, they opted for a dual-celebration approach. Despite initially delaying their wedding due to Hurricane Fran, they eventually had two ceremonies – one adhering to Sikh traditions and another at St. Andrew By-the-Sea, a Methodist church in Hilton Head, following Christian customs. Opening up to The New York Times in 2010, Nikki shared that she underwent baptism at St. Andrew By-the-Sea before their wedding. Embracing a blend of traditions, their children, Rena and Nalin, were also baptized in the Methodist Church.

The Haleys take pride in their children's achievements. Rena, a nursing graduate from Clemson University, marked a significant milestone by marrying former Clemson University football player Josh Jackson in April 2023. Meanwhile, Nalin entered his senior year at Villanova University in August 2023.
