TOMPKINSVILLE, KENTUCKY: Representative James Comer, a prosperous farmer and landholder in rural Kentucky, is renowned for his extensive landholdings in the area, which he has meticulously documented in his congressional financial disclosure documents.

These documents indicate that he owns approximately 1,600 acres (645 hectares) of land, per a report by the Associated Press (AP).

However, a closer examination of Comer's financial dealings reveals that he has treated one of his land purchases differently from the others.

In 2015, he purchased 6 acres (2.4 hectares) of land jointly with a long-time campaign contributor.

Unlike his other land purchases, Comer transferred his ownership of this land to a shell company he co-owns with his wife, called Farm Team Properties.

The transfer of ownership to a shell company raises questions about the legitimacy of the deal and risks undermining some of Comer's primary arguments in his impeachment inquiry of President Joe Biden.

What seems to have gone wrong for Rep Comer?

Comer, the Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, and his Republican colleagues have been scrutinizing President Biden's relatives for several months over their alleged use of their famous name to secure business deals.

Congressman Comer, in particular, has singled out some members of the Biden family, including the president's son, Hunter Biden, for their use of shell companies that appear to obscure substantial earnings from foreign interests and shadowy middlemen.

These companies are typically created to hold an asset such as real estate and are designed to help conceal the ownership of property and assets.

The companies used by the Bidens are already a central focus of the impeachment investigation, which is expected to gain momentum following the recent House Republican vote to formally authorize the probe.

The investigation comes on the heels of Hunter Biden's federal indictment on charges of avoiding taxes on his earnings through the companies.

While Congressman Comer has been working diligently to provide the "transparency and accountability that the American people demand" through the GOP's investigation, his own financial dealings and relationships have come under scrutiny.

This includes his connections to prominent local figures who have complicated pasts similar to some of those involved in his investigation of the Biden family.

Rep Comer has strongly denied any wrongdoing in the establishment of a shell company.

However, the revelation of the company by the Daily Beast last month led to accusations of hypocrisy from Democrats on the House floor.

In response, Comer referred to Florida’s Democratic lawmaker Jared Moskowitz as a "smurf" and stated that such criticisms are the kind of thing "only dumb, financially illiterate people pick up on."

What has been revealed thus far regarding Rep Comer’s dealings?

According to AP, Farm Team Properties, co-owned by Comer, functions in an opaque manner similar to the companies used by the Bidens, obscuring his stake in the land he co-owns with a donor from financial disclosure forms.

The disclosure records describe Farm Team Properties as his wife's "land management and real estate speculation" company, with no further details provided.

It is unclear why Comer chose to place the six acres in a shell company or what other assets Farm Team Properties may hold.

On his most recent financial disclosure forms, Comer valued the company at up to $1 million, a significant amount but a small fraction of his total wealth.

After the article was published on Thursday, Comer appeared on FOX News, revealing that Farm Team Properties "has five different assets and lots of revenue," although, he did not disclose what those assets might be.

He also falsely stated that the donor, Darren Cleary, was not a campaign contributor at the time the property was purchased.

Cleary and his family have donated to Comer's political campaigns since at least 2010, according to records.

Comer established the company in 2017 to hold his stake in the six acres he purchased in a joint venture with Cleary, a campaign contributor and construction contractor from Monroe County, Kentucky, where the congressman was born and raised.

It is unclear how Comer came to invest with Cleary, however, they have praised each other over the years, with Comer referring to Cleary as "my friend" and "the epitome of a successful businessperson" from the House floor.

Cleary, his businesses, and his family have donated approximately $70,000 to Comer's various campaigns, according to records.

He has also praised Comer on social media for "Fighting For Us Everyday" and has posted photos of the two on a golf course together.

At the time he and Comer entered their venture, Cleary was selling an acre of his family's land to Kentucky to build a highway bypass near Tompkinsville, which was completed in 2020.

He sold Comer a 50 percent stake for $128,000 in six acres he owned that would end up being adjacent to the highway.

Comer, a powerful political figure in this rural part of Kentucky, announced his bid for Congress days after purchasing the land.

Marketing materials described the land as a "choice" property and highlighted its proximity to the bypass.

The partnership sold off about an acre last year for $150,000, a substantial increase over its value when purchased, according to property records.
